  1. I would like to see side by side comparison of multiple areas on our maps using our current and this spriting scheme before I make any substantial comments. I will admit it looks cool but I'm concerned it make be harder on the eyes to look at based on some of the examples you posted.

  2. Thanks to Norwest again for the Lavaland Dwarves. We were able to create the Dwarven Fortress "Lavalfell" and spent three hours decking it out. It had a mead hall stocked with food and manly dorfs, it had full atmos setup that refilled by stealing the atmos from lavaland, it had a dormitory, full R&D setup, and a giant ass temple to Armok.

The amount of crossover between Dwarf Fortress and SS13 is awesome.

Can you elaborate a bit on what happened during this event? It feels a bit sad to miss fun events. I would love if there was a set time during the week which was "event time" or something.

Yeah totally. The Bean Asteroid ruin was spawned in(massive asteroid with a small base inside) and around 6 people were spawned inside the base as "dwarves." They were given the dwarfism and sobriety genes(tiny people who can drink a shit ton) and were given advanced equipment + some raw materials. They were to dig out the asteroid and build room and trade with the nearby syndicate space base(researchers). They were given mindslave implants to "enslave" crew members that trespassed or the dwarves just in general captured.

  4. I figured I'd make this so everyone can contribute that participated. The Space Dwarf Event that @Norwest hosted was super fun and he asked for us to drop some suggestions at one point. Before I say anything though, it was super fucking fun and I hope to do it again some time.

    Some suggestions:

    • Diplomacy should probably be encouraged at first so the dwarves don't just get dogpiled the second the crew discovers them
    • It may be helpful just to condense the area the dwarves start in(I know this might be difficult due to the asteroid being a map template) so that that trying to build stuff is a bit less chaotic and there isn't so much clutter
    • You've probably already thought of this, but having some premade dwarf 'Outfits' would ease the event setup probably.
    • A few stacks of wood would be helpful for building stuff
    • A few dwarven warriors would help with defending the base

    Please keep:

    • Giving the dwarves bone axes, they're sick.
    • Encouraging heavy drinking and reverence towards the blood god
    • doing awesome events
    • Having the dwarves enslave crewmates, it's better that they have something to do RP wise than to be removed from the round.

  5. Hey everyone!

Over the past few weeks, the wiki team has doubled down and worked their butts off to finally clean up all the issues left on the wiki. The changelog is... very long. For all intensive purposes we can now call the wiki 100% up to date, the remaining articles to fix are just guides that need to be written or expanded. I would personally like to thank a few people, @SabreMLand @Quacks have spent god knows how long uploading/upscaling/fixing/updating files on the wiki. I would detail what exactly they did but they've uploaded upwards 500+ fucking files in the past month which is just inhuman so thanks to them. Additionally thanks to @Woje, @Meow19, and @PopeDaveThe3th for just in general cleaning up and fixing articles.

What needs to be done on the Wiki:

    March Change Log:

    Spoiler

March changelog, this was put in a spoiler bc it's very long!

    end log

We've hit the point where we're no longer catching up to the codebase. We have a few pages/images that need to be fixed but those will be taken care of within a week or two. Now we can focus on some other project on the wiki; namely, I want to take a stab at lore (@Englishformula) was already getting started on this(Forum post coming soon?). I want to look into possibly standardizing stuff in terms of color schemes, tables formatting, and all that jazz. Finally, I want to work on article quality, up to date/well-formatted doesn't necessarily equate to well-written/helpful so that's something else we'll be focusing on.

If you want to get involved with editing the wiki and don't know how, @ me on the discord and I'll sit down and teach you stuff when I get the chance. I hope to continue doing this every 1-2 months. I have a really good guide for learning how to wiki here

As always, thanks for the hard work everyone!

  6. I'm not a fan of buffing implants(or R&D as it stands). This would just allow antags to more easily get flash protection anyway without needing to wear a welding shield/steal sunglass or sechuds. Some implants like surgery/engi tools are beneficial and worth it to go spend 10 minutes waiting in the medbay for(this is really not a long time). I appreciate your suggestions as I've read a few, however, I think your suggested changes focus too much on the utility of item and features and don't give enough merit to how this affects balance in other facets of our server.

  7. I think this is cool, but just not feasible. The established purpose of the SRO is to allow players to play around with certain game mechanics in an environment that doesn't punish failure harshly(and for the most part w/o consequence). Implementing this change would give people more reason to invade this space ruin(which is supposed to be secret) and otherwise ruin the initial purpose of it.

There wouldn't be a great deal of measurable RP value out of this anyway. People who are contract kidnapped are in jail for a small amount of time, and players who would take up these mob spawner slots just to participate in watching/interrogating the prisoners would likely find that people don't get kidnapped often enough for this to be fun and would likely cryo/kill themselves. This just takes up slots for people who wants to learn toxins/tegs/botany/etc.

  8. reviving this topic a little bit. This discussion has lead to possibly adding more wiki rights to Mentors(and giving them a wiki user group) and Game Admins. One part of this discussion that I really wanted to hone in on is having someone specifically overseeing the wiki. There is no official designated wiki lead right now and we haven't had one since ShadeyKins retired from the server roughly 3 years ago.

Even if they didn't have necessarily more permission on the wiki, having someone approving/setting rules for the wiki is important to ensuring quality and establishing direction for it. Administratively, I'm not sure how Headmins would want to handle this role but I think it should be up for discussion soon. Baystations wiki is a perfect example of what can happen when you put a well-qualified person(or a few people) specifically in charge of a wiki. Their wiki looks amazingly good it is arguably the best ss13 wikis out there and I want our server to either reach that level of quality or surpass it.

  9. I think the blood tomato's replenishing blood is cool idea, however part of a good suggestion is it has to take into account balance. I would support this change if and only if there were two features that were removed from botany to implement this. Botany as it stands, is more effective at accomplishing goals that are often the central purpose of entire other departments than the departments are of accomplishing it themselves. Other departments have capabilities to produce weapons, medical stuff, etc like you said, however they are more policed by security, restricted by SOP, and restrained by the limits of their resources than botany is.

In my personal opinion, Botany is not lacking a wider variety of features(ex: blood tomato's restoring blood.) It lacks depth. People can too easily access all of the best and most powerful mechanics of botany by picking it up over 8-10 shifts. At that point a botanist can become more powerful than the entire security department if they so choose to. Adding your suggestion will just exacerbate the issue. Is your suggestion good idea wise? Yes, I think it's cool and there's logical reasoning behind it. Is it good for the server and balance? No.

You clearly have some good ideas, we just need to come up with something that addresses the issues of the department before we decide to give it more weapons in its arsenal. Thanks for your suggestion and your willingness to defend it :)

me and @Peak made a fully functioning TRI-SM setup.... until it turned into a chernobyl recreation. it was even the fourth reactor to add to the realism! Thanks to @Denghis for the screenshots. Overall good fun, got some improvements to make with the design.......

My favorite part was when a civilian attempted to eat the middle SM shard to stop delamination and it actually partially worked. The civilian was dusted but the integrity went back up to 100% and eventually went on to consume the other delaminating SM.

  11. Hey everyone!

Over this month, I've been focusing on upgrading some more architectural aspects of the wiki. More maintenance templates/categories have been created in order to better label, identify, and solve issues we have in our articles. I've created the beginnings of a maintenance panel that provides links to important special pages and provides basic statistics and graphs of the statuses on articles. Additionally, there has been significant progress on updating all PNG/GIF files on the wiki from 32x32 px to 64x64 px. Also, the Supermatter PR is evil and is the bane of my existence(because we have to fix so many damn articles, no hard feelings).

What needs to be done on the Wiki:

    • The Supermatter page needs context added about the Engine/Shard itself
    • Charlie Station(mob spawner) needs to be written
    • Charlie Station(location) needs to be created
    • Assemblies needs to be created
    • EMP Effects needs to be finished
    • Voice of God page needs to be formatted and cleaned up
    • Guide to Medical needs to take into account new radiation changes due to the Supermatter PR
    • Implants needs to be checked over for inaccuracies
    • TEG could needs to be looked over and revised by someone experienced with that engine
    • Guide to Engineering needs to be updated to take into Supermatter PR
    • Custom Job Table at the bottom of Clown needs to be brought up to date
    • Explorer needs stylistic changes to be made
    • Guide to Mining needs a bit of a rewrite
    • Singularity and Tesla Engine pages need to be updated bc of Supermatter PR
    • beg the headmins to give me the power to delete stuff: the sequel

    March Change Log:

We're slowly approaching the point of fully updating every page, what is listed under the changes that need to be made to the wiki, is to my knowledge, everything that is left to update as of this thread being posted. I want to begin to take on some larger picture issues. I've been reading up on how Wikipedia and BayStation Wiki keep up high standards and I think I have some ideas we can implement. I'm looking at recreating the Manual of Style of our wiki, establishing a few standards for how we handle grading articles/determine what needs revision, and establishing the framework/tools our contributors will need to get our wiki from good to great!(will be a separate post at some point).

If you want to get involved with editing the wiki and don't know how, @ me on the discord and I'll sit down and teach you stuff when I get the chance. I hope to continue doing this every 1-2 months. I have a really good guide for learning how to wiki here

  12. I disagree with this suggestion. It very specifically outlines where/when you are allowed to unwrench a pipe to catch antags. In a scenario like this, the vent crawling antag will be able to see said person unwrenching the pipes and would be able to actively intervene and do something(unwrenching takes a few seconds). Additionally, vent crawling antags can often relocate to another network(scrubber/supply) or another room while the person would have to rewrench the pipe before moving on.

Besides, this will only happen very very rarily. It may be annoying to the vent-crawling antag, however, it is also annoying to the crew to not be able to lay a finger on an antag because they immediately vent away. This can unreasonably prolong the life of certain team antags and would actually allow the crew to possibly hunt them down. This exception gives the crew one small strategy that can't really be abused without still breaking Rule 0.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, however, it is not unreasonable for crew to do this. It doesn't really fall under "a dick move" because the antag has opportunity to combat this and in normal circumstances, alternate means of escape.

  13. I think suggestion fails to take into account how people feel about having a certain trait forced upon them. I play my character, Edgar Cook, because I love his backstory and it's very personal to me. Most people will include negative traits that their characters have in order to give them a bit of flavor. This makes playing the character more fun and overall the gameplay is enjoyable. However, if you force someone to have a negative trait it messes with that backstory that was personally created.

My character is from Boston on Earth and therefor speaks with a bit of an accent. It makes no sense to have him have a swedish accent. He practices law, which a terrets disability would ruin. 1/12 of men on earth are colorblind and not even to the extent of how our server interprets colorblindness feature wise. It make my gameplay less fun.

If Genetics needs to be reworked to be more fun and engaging, it's because how genetics is designed to interact with the station, not the other way around.

  14. I think this would be a cool point of discussion. I personally think that if we did change how requesting the Gamma Armory is done. It should be like requesting the on station Nuclear Codes. I would like to point out that while Gamma SOP is great, what's the point of the alert if people are going to follow the SOP in the first place? Red Alert requires that people stay within their departments and that all civilian level visitors stay in the dorms/bar area. Perhaps if we amended Red Alert SOP to be less restrictive on movement it would give Gamma alerts a bit more oomph.

While I think my suggestion for how to request Gamma Alert is rather restrictive and goes against what your vision of Gamma SOP should be, there's a lot of reasoning. Imagine a few members of command having the ability to suspend all SOP. That's not really something ICly command should have the authority to do, and abuse could not be prevented without the involvement of CC(if you could just swipe for the alert) which would put pressure on admins to either reduce the restrictiveness/seriousness of the alert or have to double-down on regulating/enforcing how it is used/called.

  15. If we added an additional curator role, the wiki contributor would likely just be a vanity role as I can't think of anything they would actually need outside of what a general user gets. A Curator should prob get autopatrol, noratelimit, unwatchedpages, patrol, delete-redirect and possibly delete pages like you said. Mentors could likely just get the same as a curator.

If we were to make Wiki-Admin a full fledged staff role then I would amend the user rights to possibly just be full Sysops/Interface rights outside of what Bureaucrats get.

  16. Alright, so after having some discussion in the wiki-dev portion of the discord(and learning that pinging headmins is a gamble that you don't often win) and mulling over this for a month beforehand, I wanted to make this forum post so we could have an official discussion over this(and so I can be specific in what I'm asking for).

As of now there are only a few User Group rights on the wiki. Those are:

    • Regular autoconfirmed users
    • Game Admins
    • Interface/Bureaucrats Sysops Admins.

Currently there is no in-between role for Regular Users Vs. Fully fledged administrators on the staff team. While we have a large team of admins, their primarily role is on the server and interacting with the community on the forums. Headmins/Admins also have to deal with Ban Appeals and generally fixing the server when it goes to shit. Additionally, editing the wiki can be a boon for people that aren't interested in it.

I'm content with pinging an admin to delete one page, however there's the issue with there being around 500+ unused files on the wiki. In order to remove those from the wiki, I'm supposed to mark them as Slated for Removal and then personally ask someone with wiki perms to delete them. That's not only inefficient but inconsiderate to ask for because those files would take over 2+ hours to fully delete all of them.

What I'm proposing is a Wiki Admin of a sorts, they have slightly elevated permissions(as I've listed below). Issues on the wiki would be something that could be continually taken care of and prevent buildups. We have one of the best wiki's out of most SS13 servers, rivaled only by Baystation and Yogstation. I think it could be better by having people who's job on the server is to primarily maintain and improve the wiki.

IF we made a Wiki Admin role this is the User Rights I am asking for (Specific rights listed under points)

    • The Ability to delete things
      • Delete, delete-redirect

    • Be able to view deletion logs

      • deleterevision, deletedhistory, deletedtext

    • The Ability to Block Users (mostly for fighting vandalism and bots)

      • Block, hideuser

    • Merging/Moving of Certain Things

      • mergehistory, suppressredirect

    • Ability to Rollback Edits

      • rollback

    • General Administration Stuff

      • autopatrol, noratelimit, unwatchedpages, patrol, browsearchive, suppressionlog, viewsuppressed

IF we made a Wiki Admin role this is the User Rights I am specifically NOT asking for (but ill take if headmins want it)

    • The Ability to Edit Protected Pages
    • The Ability to alter protections on pages
    • Anything that gives permissions to edit the CSS and JS files of users/pages/the site
    • The ability to edit the interface, a.k.a the sidebar toolbox stuff
    • Ability to delete logs
    • The ability to edit user rights
    • The ability to delete site change tags
    • The ability to delete pages with large amounts of edits(see bigdelete)
      • For this one specifically we may need to raise $wgDeleteRevisionsLimit if it is not above 20-30 to make this restriction work

I highly encourage anyone who is interested or has a stake in this conversation(wiki contribs, Paradise staff) to discuss what user rights you think are ok for this kind of role below. These User rights that I have described gives people with those rights, significant power on the wiki. However, it is not enough to do irreversible damage or to touch the database, JSON, or CSS and while they can view the logs, they cannot edit them and attempt to erase their actions which makes it much easier for administrators to step in and be able to trace when problems arise(which they likely won't).

What this does give these admins the power to do is be able to delete unnecessary item on the wiki, block vandals and bots, be able to view certain logs, and a few quality-of-life improvements.

I propose that this kind of role, whatever it would be called, is given to Wiki-Contributors that fall under a certain criteria:

    1. Are active on the wiki
    2. Have a significant amount of wiki edits(think 250-500+ edits)
    3. Have a thorough understanding of mediawiki, for example:
      1. Templates
      2. Special Pages
      3. View Histories
      4. General Structure of the Wiki(think namespaces)
    4. Can thoughtfully create an application like we have for mentors, PR reviewers, and admins

I realize this is a lot to ask from the Head Staff team because it would result in changes needing to be made in roles on the site, wiki, and the discord. However, I see this as something necessary and an overall positive improvement to the server. Thank you for your consideration and anyone who wants to chip in on this discussion.

  17. Hey everyone!

Every day the wiki is getting more up to speed with all the changes going on! 90% of what we considered "in need of revision" back in December has been revised and made new! We are currently sitting at just under 20 articles in need of revision, most of which are brand new articles that need more added to them(or to be cleaned up).

I'm going to try and continue this trend of providing sitreps on the wiki in hopes to document what's going on get people invested in the process.

What needs to be done on the Wiki:

    • The Guide to Food and Drinks is missing a few sections
    • The png file for Meat on the wiki still uses the old sprite and should be updated
    • The Supermatter page should be gone over with a fine comb
    • Charlie Station(mob spawner) needs to be written
    • Charlie Station(location) needs to be created
    • EMP Effects needs to be finished(Currently Assigned to @Shaw)
    • Megafauna>Colossus needs to have its loot section reduced in size
    • Voice of God page needs to be formatted and cleaned up
    • Guide to Medical needs general edits and needs to take into account new radiation changes due to the recent PR
    • Implants needs to be checked over for inaccuracies
    • TEG could needs to be looked over and revised by someone experienced with that engine
    • Guide to Engineering needs to be updated to take into account tesla/singulo being non-default
    • File:Engineeringroom.png needs to be updated

  18. Hello everyone! If you've been paying attention to the github and discord you'll notice that there is a lot of chatter about Map Rotation. I am unsure of how long it will be until Map rotation is actually an available feature of Paradise however things are moving fast so I wanted us to get ahead of the game and make some preemptive changes.

I am going to begin adding the structure necessary to support locations for three different stations on one page. This won't be visible at first because they will be tagged out with <onlyinclude> tags, so please don't delete it.

If you want to help let me know.

  19. Hey everyone!

It seems to be that people are ramping up editing the wiki which is awesome. Infact, we've gone from having around 30ish articles needing revision down to 20. Which is spectacular!

I'm writing these in hope that people will get some sort of direction in regards to what needs to be done on the wiki to improve it and how they can get involved so we can get people assigned to articles. Additionally, I'm hoping this can serve as some sort of documentation as to what big changes have been made to the wiki so people can read the actual up to date material.

What needs to be done on the Wiki:

    • Lavaland articles need a massive overhaul. They have not been properly written since Lavaland was added a few years ago. This will require a few dedicated people and some advanced planning.
    • The EMP Effects page still needs more content to be added to it. Currently @Shaw is heading this up so make sure to contact them before making edits.
    • Engineering Items is outdated and needs old items removed and new items added(such as the emergency floodlight), this is a really good project for anyone that wants to learn how to wiki edit btw.
      • References outdated items like the Syndicate Cloaking Device
      • Many many images are missing, especially under the computers sections
      • Things like the Space Heater could be updated to use their gif version which are already on the wiki
    • Medical Items needs to be cleaned up. While it could use a onceover to look for missing items it has other formatting issues
      • Has redundant location/page references (ex: marking location as OR1 and OR2 when Operating Theatre is more appropriate)
      • Has Strike-through jokes on a reference page for department items(this should be saved for Guides/Job Pages)
      • Descriptions of the items are not supposed to be a how-to. They are supposed to be a description on what they are and what they do, many of these descriptions can be shortened as a result
      • General Clean Formatting: References to pages like the Guide to Chemistry should not be in <code> blocks and the descriptions of items should probably not be text-aligned to the center
    • TEG needs an experienced Atmosian to look over it.
      • I would go more into detail of it, but I don't know enough about atmos to comment on it.
    • Guide to Admin Tools needs to be populated with more content. If any admins would like to contribute to this that would be great...
    • Guide to Spriting needs to be looked over by an experienced spriter
      • There are external links to TGstation spriting stuff(big no no) that either need to be removed or redone to direct to Paradise Pages
    • Languages needs to be formatted, it's currently just a wall of text with some headers.
      • This is great if you want to learn how to format an article
      • Don't delete stuff on Wryns. Coding Chat told me that "they're going to be readded at some point so don't delete" >:|
    • Honk Squad needs to be cleaned up it's fine
    • Geneticist needs examples of how they can help out the station added to it

Major Changes that Have Been made Since December

    • Riot Control Article has been rewritten
    • Abductor Article has been rewritten
    • Guide to Engineering has been rewritten
    • Guide to Space Exploration has been revised and finished
    • Russian Derelict location has been added
    • Blob was reformatted and cleaned up
    • Guide to Paperwork was updated to include all supported bbcode
    • An outdated section of Security Pod Pilot was removed from Security SOP
    • Lots and lots of minor edits

Since most other threads on this subsection of the forums are extremely old(and stagnant). Feel free to report missing/in need of revision wiki pages here. Additionally, if you want to get involved with editing the wiki and don't know how, @ me on the discord and I'll sit down and teach you stuff when I get the chance. I hope to continue doing this every 1-2 months.

What is the most fun way to play IAA?

You're kind of like a legal/SOP detective. If you focus on investigation and gathering evidence then your reports become better and you can really enjoy the process. Throwing in RP here and there also goes a long way to killing boredom and adding a little spice to your interactions. Personally, I think some people won't ever enjoy being an IAA. The whole paperwork process and the slow nature of getting things done isn't what people look for in SS13 and as a result many people avoid play an IAA. But if I had to give one piece of advice, once you get the role down, make it your own and customize your processes.

What is the most enjoyable part of the job?

I think the two best parts of the job is when everything comes together in the end and somebody's round is improved in the process. Recently, we had an officer that may have incorrectly executed a perma prisoner, people neglected to terminate the prisoners ID and properly clothe him. Right as command told him to stop he gave the prisoner a lethal injection and as a result was demoted. He was obviously disappointed because he enjoyed being security, me and the other IAA spent an 1 hour interviewing 4-5 people and we found out that the prisoner had a freedom implant that sec had forgotten remove and the prisoner had nearly gotten out of execution before he died. As he was still considered uncontainable at that point and he had an execution order on him the officer was actually in the right and the order was given to reinstate. Players really appreciate when you validate their actions they were punished for and you help them restore their job/status. That's the best part right there.

How proactive do you need to be to search out "cases" or SOP breaches to get something to do, in your estimate?

Usually doing rounds of the station every 15 minutes is more than enough. Paying attention to comms is by the best way to find cases. A lot of times people will just bring cases to you (ex: the AI screaming about something, someone PDA'ing you, a head asking for your help). Part of this is building your reputation in the station, if people know you as a good IAA agent they are much more likely to ask for your help or call for you. You have to be super proactive/have good initiative as an IAA because sitting in your office usually yields you a round where you get 1-2 cases out of people just finding you and that's not all that fun.

Thanks for the questions and support!
