If what you're planning to do helps with your objectives in some way you usually get away with it, but not always, if two or three victims throw a player complaint you're gonna get bwoinked for an explanation regardless of circumstances.

With things like mass bombing or gassing the station its always better to ahelp first to let the admins know what you're planning so they know you're not just griefing, 99% of the time they won't have a problem with it, and when they do its usually because its OTT or lag inducing, you just have to bear in mind whether or not you're being "excessive" in taking people out of the round.

One idea you could have picked on (that nobody ever does) is how Orwell merges the Lenin and Stalin figures.

Animal farm doesn't explore how the (though whether they existed in the first place at all is a matter of contention) "good intentions" fall apart from the top down as they (allegedly) did IRL.

Animal Farm is a great analogy for Stalinism, just don't ever compare it to anything before 1920.

Good post, its a rare thing to see a wall of text that can be read from start to end without expending huge amounts of willpower. Just to throw in my 2 cents though, I do think you've come to the wrong conclusion, still a good analysis just the wrong result. What you're describing in your post, and I've seen it too, a lot actually, is just a typical attitude that naturally develops in people.

It might not be particularly "polite" but that's all it really is, nobody likes being talked down to but its just a fact of life.

What you talk about when you're being tazed for axe-taking is more of an IC thing, more to the point, being a dick IC (so long as you aren't atrociously so) isn't against the rules, for better or worse, other players get away with such behaviour all the time.

    Why?

You have to remember here the server is officially light/medium RP, its not "anything goes", but in my experience a lot sure does so long as it isn't outright griefing. The impression I've gotten are that the rules are primarily in place to prevent game breaking activity rather than direct gameplay itself, that's a boon or a malus depending on your play style.

You took an axe, as the equivalent of a secret service agent (IN SPACE), that can be seen as justified or not in quite a few ways, it sucks when those above you disagree with your own position but that's how it is.

I don't expect the admins to be paragons of virtue, I'd just like them to purge the griefers, at least try to be consistent in their dealing with players, and not abuse their powers excessively.

I wouldn't say Paradise is dying, not at this time anyway, maybe not changing for the better, it certainly does have a few problems (you didn't touch on favouritism that much) but its not got a terminal rot or anything.

But hey maybe the whole thing will collapse in a month, or a year, who knows? Its the internet, anything could happen.

  4. Part of the reason most servers don't allow ERP is because of the legal problems, what with minors inevitably getting into the playerbase and all, its a headache admins really don't want to suffer.

Tourette's needs removed or FUKKIN nerfed. It's perminant, constantly stuns, makes communication neigh impossible, and has no good reason to be there over other disabilities.

But what else is better than a pen full of epileptic stuttering screaming monkey men with a five or six station bounced radios mixed in?

Usually topping out at around 50 ish players at peak times.

Doesn't have the same charm as 80 (lot more difficult to "get lost"), but strangely more work gets done.

Greytide can be a pain but anything's better than a skeletal station IMO, which is what the server usually is outside of weekends/evenings (at least in my time-zone).

As in a power jammer, a box like device that shut off the electricity in a certain radius around it for a short while( think: mini power sink, maybe 4-12 squares for 30 seconds or so with a time delay to activate?)

Like in the black out random event but on a localized scale.

Obviously it'd be very potent (switching off all the lights nearby? great for losing pursuit, no idea what to price it at in crystals though), but a viable alternative to emagging everything, probably with limited uses or a really long cool down for balancing.

On that note: a radio jammer would be cool too, far too often are fights over in 10 seconds when someone yells "halp bein killed", specialized gear like this would allow traitors to be more... well, specialized : too :P, after all, the emag is much more than just a masterkey but that's what its usually used for.

are you sure? unless that was a recent change, i never had that problem as a geneticist

I haven't played with genetics in a while, but I distinctly remember failing to get around the nerf via robotic limbs, I died a slow death from suffocation when my chest deformed.

  9.

does the "your X becomes weirdly shapen thing" actually matter for anything other then hands? because you can just grab robotic hands at round start (like me)

As far as I know it affects most body parts, so eventually your head/chest would decay and you'd slowly die from brain damage/suffocation.

I used to love machine people for their crankiness lack of lungs and ability to punch their own heads off...

Recently though, I've seen how greyt greys are and play them almost exclusively, there's a mysterious appeal to driving people insane with telepathy.

The borg at least is useful, doing things like shutting off the engine and messing with airlocks, but the xeno AI just doesn't... do anything.

I imagine there are probably plans to expand its role but until it actually has one probably best to just scrap it.

  12. Making the DNA lock require a blood sample or something would be a nice way of getting rid of the joyriding civilians who always grand theft auto any ripley not locked up at the mining station;

I agree, the moment they see one threat or they establish something like "I saw some guy running around dressed as a wizard." Suddenly everyone is on the lookout for a wizard and stop giving a fuck about any other possible threats unless they are staring them in the face.

This mentality that the playerbase has is actually really fun to play with.

Such as buying an emag running around hacking all the APCS and convincing everyone the round is malfunction for example, or enthralling someone as a vampire giving them a flash and telling them to give everyone free eye tests to give the heads of staff a nice panic.

The best way though is to have a voice changer, and call yourself "alien queen/gonk operative #4/Grondorf the unwieldy and yell over comms.

Never actually done any of these myself but I've seen them be super effective...

  14.

A much more recent trend that's sadly now near universal...

HoS's/Wardens/NT recruiters who rush to armoury at red alert, DNA lock the mech, and then proceed to park it in their office for the rest of the round and never head into harms way.

  15.

People who just say "no" to everything, 4noraison.

"Hey QM, got any spare gloves?" "No, fuck off clown/chaplain/IAA"

And there's a special circle of hell for edgy angry anthromorphs, especially the ones who push and shove into the HoP line with their claws/are only ever any modicum of helpful towards other catbeasts/bird spawn :x

Being an asshole IC can be hilarious if done properly, but mostly the people who do are just obstructive/selfish bastards.

But the worst thing of all is when sec uses the flimsiest "evidence" and no one objects.

"Oh you have a a flash? You obviously broke into the armoury! no fooling me criminal scum!"- That actually happened to me last round as janitor because someone stole a cleaning grenade :|

  16.

Vigilantes who play at being sec officers (you are under arrest for being CRIMINAL SCUM) and actually try to follow some sort of due process can be great fun (especially if there's a magistrate).

Most of them though are just glorified lynch mobs though, using the possibly of the victim being an antag to justify murdering them with little to no reason, and that's no fun at all.
