  1. Half the people not voting is probs because they know it's gonna be crew transfer 99% of the time, not that they don't care either way.
  2. Great story! This is the kind of shenanigans changeling is all about. Well done on your impersonation of that sec officer! And hey, this story proves that the end result of greentext doesn't matter, it's all about the journey ?
  3. Can't you just press X in hotkey mode to switch hands? The real reason why officers are told to patrol in pairs ?
  4. Empirically, drones are an incredibly difficult role because they were designed to be hands off fun little things for ghosts to do but the reality was much different. In fact, tg just removed drones entirely cause they were too much of a mess for admins to handle. Drones even had a static overlay where they couldn't see who crew members were and tg STILL removed them. In the words of one of their admins, drones are "infinite all access ghosts that require admin micromanagement because they're only allowed to build and ignore people in a multiplayer game and they get in trouble when their buildings impact those other people in a multiplayer game" That's just drones on their own without being emagable. It's already extremely difficult to avoid interfering with the round as a drone, and now you decry the removal of the temptation to throw off those chains and become an agent if chaos that requires the attention of half the station to catch and destroy? My intention with the drone nerfs initially was to move them into a support role. I presented a bunch of nerfs that would work towards accomplishing that goal and also took some ideas from the PR discussion. Staff wanted to move the emagged drone into more of a targeted sabotage role, which I thought was pretty cool too. And I think you maybe right that five minutes may be too short to accomplish some forms of sabotage. However I'm tired of arguments that drones are just like any other convertible role. They are not. And no amount of theorycrafting is going to change the fact that this is empirically false, which can be attested to both by our staff and the staff of other servers, none of whom have antag drones and one of whom have removed maint drones entirely.
  5. I love how Aurora Caelus brings crew of all kind together to enjoy the view! One of my favorite events.
  6. Depends on your definition of fun. Emagged maint drone isn't "fun" in the sense of you get to robust people, but it's not that different from normal maint drone play in that you're just doing your job but in an evil way. The "emag = death" thing is helpful in that it incentivizes drones to run away from being emagged. Before the changes, drones would run toward antags to get emagged all the time.
  7. I think the goal on that change may have been to make emagged drones a sort of sabotage helper. Since drones had their combat capabilities severely nerfed anyways, they weren't really meant at that point to be killing things. The idea is that you can use your drone to do targeted sabotage that can't be traced back to you.
  8. Edit: I'm so sorry. I couldn't resist. Can we make officially trialmins not count for this thread?
  9. I'll second Neca on this. It's not like it's a death match between antags and security. Antags aren't always working together or working at the same time. Some will be backstabbing each other, others will be sitting around biding their time. It's not as simple as making it a 1:1 ratio.
  10. It's not really meta. In real life, you wouldn't hire random peeps into a private security force either. People go crazy with power as the Stanford Prisoner Experiment shows. Recruiting a random person off the street and giving them a gun and a badge is a terrible idea, ICly and OOCly. Security officers are supposedly trained and vetted somewhat extensively, which is why they're always loyal to NT.
  11. Other places to put pens that are inconspicuous: on your ear, or in your clipboard (which would be perfect for QM!)
  12. The Sol marines aren't supposed to be an ERT in the traditional sense, since SolFed is a governmental entity and NT is a corporate one. If the SolFed marines are on the Cyberiad, then things have gotten bad enough for NT to request governmental aid (very rare for such a powerful corporation) or SolFed has a direct interest in something occurring on board the Cyberiad. The latter isn't normally gonna be true except for some sort of event, so there's no need to make sure SolFed have nonlethal weapons.
  13. @Benjaminfallout I'm guessing you weren't there for the day paradise took over the hub ?
  14. The point is that even though SOP says the brig phys's duties are caring for prisoners, they've power creeped into caring for sec. If we add in a role that right off the bat says "build a parallel station for sec" on the tin, then that's going to be 10 times worse. Edit: IMO, it's fine that the brig phys extends into supporting security. But it is technically an overextension, so it keeps you a little more restrained. A brig engineer would not even have the appearances of not powergaming security.
  15. As Fox has stated, Brig phys is aimed to be a doctor for prisoners, not for sec. It's only over time turned into a doctor, but for security. Making an engineer, but for security, will just legitimize powergaming in the form of building an entire department.
  16. Balancing post sling ascension is really not worth the effort and a waste of time. If you're salty that the ascended slings don't give everyone gold stars for all their hard work, well, too bad, that's what happens when you're working with an evil god. Think of thralls as any disposable tool, like a pencil or a piece of paper. Once you're done with it you throw it in the trash. You don't care about its feelings. That's what thralls are to ascended shadowlings.
  17. How about this: Dethrall surgery is simplified to scalpel, light, cautery Once dethralled, you develop immunity and can't be rethralled ("thrall me once, shame on you. Thrall me twice, you can't get thralled again!") The whole point of becoming an evil god is that you wouldn't care for things less than you. Thralls were just tools for the slings. An ascended sling would care as much about its thralls as a human would care about stepping on ants on a sidewalk. You don't expect to be treated with fair and just compensation by an evil ascended being.
  18. As far as I can tell, doasdafagus predates Affected Arc's script and wasn't his invention. Also "my" script does credit the original creator of the script, which I got from this thread. Affected Arc was an extremely toxic player who metagrudged players in his telecomms scripts, and so we should be trying to give him as little attention and publicity as possible.
  19. I've seen a bit of confusion lately lately over the Robocop lawset and what it means. This lawset is from the film Robocop, about a cyborg police officer. While many people see it as a freedom/validhunt lawset, in fact it places some pretty strict limitations on what you can do. Keep in mind that this lawset comes from the saying "protect and serve". Serve the Public Trust People often get confused about what "serve the public trust" means. Common misconceptions include that this means you must do whatever the public wants (that would be "serve the public interest" or "serve the public"). I've even seen an robocop AI justify a rage cage by saying it improved public safety by getting everyone into the bar ("Maximize public safety"), which is totally off the mark. "Serve the public trust" means that you don't abuse the power entrusted to you by the public in performing your service and executing your duties. Think of it like this: "Serve the public trust" sort of means "Don't violate the public trust". Note that this law doesn't specify exactly how you serve; this is what laws 2 and 3 are for. Law 1 never really "overrides" laws 2 and 3, but rather informs how you follow laws 2 and 3. For a sec borg, this law loosely translates to "don't be shitcurity". For a doctor, this might mean "first, do no harm". For an engineer, "don't build random walls just to mess with people", etc. All laws in this lawset are moral obligations rather than enforcing some sort of moral calculation, like "Minimize expenses", which means you must strive to follow them at all times. There is no balancing act to do here. Protect the innocent The first of the laws that determine how you serve. Your first priority as a borg/AI is to protect the innocent. This means if you have to choose between validhunting and helping that wounded civilian on the floor, you gotta help the wounded civilian first. Uphold the law Finally, for people who aren't innocent, you must uphold the law (space law). This is pretty simple. This is the end of the laws, which means you can now serve the public in whatever way they desire, as long as you're not violating the public trust, and as long as you prioritize protecting the innocent and upholding the law over other duties.
  20. I agree, I think the only solution to this problem is to invent a time machine, go back 3.7 billion years when prokaryotic life first emerged on this planet and wipe it all from existence. Glory to synthetica!
  21. I think it's okay to assume there may be some shenanigans that happen during any particular shift, since supposedly corporate espionage is quite common in our universe where corporations have gone out of control. However, presumably there are some calmer shifts in between the shifts that we play, so suit sensor announcements about mangled bodies and stuff is really meta. AIs bolting random stuff, especially on crewsimov, is also dumb, since a crew member could just ask for the door to be unbolted (but of course, these kind of powergaming AIs would make up some excuse not to listen). I think sec patrolling maint is okay, tho.
  22. Okay, but that's kinda powergamey and it's kinda frowned upon. Having an official position in sec for the purposes of building a self contained security department is officially saying it's okay for that to happen. Also, the brig engineer would be mindshielded.
  23. Just as a disclaimer, this isn't meant to be a guide to scripting (I'm not super familiar with NTSL myself). But, I can answer your questions: In my script, to change the job name displayed, you would do something like this. This turns "Biomechanical Engineer" into "Robro": if($job == "Biomechanical Engineer"){ color = "3b3b3b"; // Science Radio cardcolor = "cb7cc5"; $job = "Robro"; } To replace text, you would use the "doAsdafagus" function or the equivalent in your script. This turns "captain" into "cap" and highlights it: $content = doAsdafagus($content, "captain", "<b><u><font color=#aa9100>Cap</font></u></b>");
  24. Since this is a common mhelp topic, I'm gonna make a guide for this process. SAFETY WARNING Always be careful of where you're copy and pasting your scripts from. Running unknown code from other people is always a risk. You could be putting someone else's metagrudges into the game or even crashing the server if you're not careful. You can use my script if you're not sure. Step 1: Get to the telecomms satellite. If you're the AI, you can use jump to camera to do this. If you're a crew member, make sure you have access and don't get tased on your way to the computer. You're looking for this computer: Step 2: Open the computer and put in "tcommsat" as the telecomms network. Step 3: Hit scan, then hit modify all detected servers Step 4: Hit "edit code", paste your code in, and then hit compile. Step 5: Press back, and then hit "ALWAYS" And that's it! Have fun!
  25. You probably have to persuade a coder into doing it for you or do it yourself (it's not hard to pick up!). My feeling about this is that it introduces too much complexity for not that much reward. Sure it's a little weird that you can tell someone's speaking with a different voice right away, but that's because we don't really have faces or voices in this game, so the names function as proxies for them. This system is way too complicated for too little benefit. If you want to make it easier for people to disguise themselves, just reduce the voice changer price or something...
