just the concept of immediately losing because a single projectile hit you kind of just doesn't feel like it fits the environment we're in now, where you're encouraged to talk but if you stop to type you can immediately lose because of how one-sided the combat can be at times.

Preach it from the fucking rooftops.

  2. I believe that any test to the instastun mechanic would be appreciated, and talks about removing it have been in the works for at least 3 years if not more.  Obviously I can see an argument for removing them because "MUH GREYTIDE" but like, if anyone was being an intentional nuisance then admins should get involved (Change my mind).

    1. Raise the base time requirement for security to be at least approximately 20 hours as a member of the crew (ghosting / observing time should not count). I would personally prefer that the time that they're waiting for those 20 hours be done in a job field other then trader/civilian/greytide but it's w/e.

    2. The Warden and Magistrate should both be assisting the Head of Security with training / correcting the behavior of Security Officers.

    3. The HOS should be given the means of demoting a Security Officer if they see fit to do so based on reasonable evidence that the officer is inept, a danger to themselves or others, or some other egregious offense that limits corrective action. The Captain should, of course, be the one supervising and checking the HOS's ability to actually function in their job capacity.

    4. Hired persons who are being openly hostile / toxic towards security, especially over communications, should be subject to IA investigation (since they need more to do anyway). Following such, a recommendation to demote may be given to the head of that department. If they decline their judgement is obviously subject to CC oversight. From that point, CC can bring the hammer down if necessary on the persons involved or the entire department (because who doesn't love group punishment for two people).

    5. Implement a new book called "Guide to Station Patrol" which outlines the very BASICS such as gear & use of gear, SOP, common issues, etc. The goal of which being something very quick and easy to read that will give a new security player the foundations to build upon rather then them going out into the station with taser in one hand, baton in the other, and arresting someone by harmbatonning for graffiti.

I love everything and I also like the idea of 4.  4 would need to have it's own suggestion thread where it's broken down and discussed heavily because there might be room for abuse (or maybe no room for abuse, I dunno, someone make a suggestion thread.)

  4. Honestly I wouldn't mind bumping up the security officer playtime compared to the other jobs just because it's such an abusable role, especially for greytide/power-tripping new players.  If you don't have at least a basic grasp of robustness, space law, and hell even the station dynamic, then you're going to have a bad time.  Hell, I don't see this being an unpopular opinion at all, it's just common sense.

Now for an opinion that may very well be unpopular!

I personally don't really have any idea of how to counteract this, because how is anyone going to learn the ropes or basics of a job if they're unable to play it? At the same time, what I said above. It's kind of a pickle.

I'd say this is less of a pickle than it seems.  Station incompetence is a fundamental part of as to why this game is still a game.  It's a disaster simulator.  Yes, choosing a department and being able to master it (such as learning how to be an extremely robust Doctor or robust Engineer) is immensely satisfying for a lot of people, and there are many people that come in time and time again that learn, grow, and become valuable assets.  But when there are 100+ moving, individual players, all with different ideas roles and routines, it's easy for things to fall apart and not work smoothly.  You can play scientist and not be able to do anything cause the entire mining team died on Lavaland.  You could be a doctor and be overwhelmed by patients and have zero chemists.  It's part of the game.  If everything ran smoothly every single shift there wouldn't be a point, cause when it does run smoothly it's boring (play medical with a fully competent medical staff and no antags, you'll find yourself tempted to cryo from boredom)

My problem is that people sometimes get used to the status quo of a perfectly running station.  You get killed by bullshit (which is normal), get mad at it, and then get even madder because a newbie doctor fails to revive you or an newbie engineer failed to cover a breach.  Everyones gotten mad at this game for it's bullshit, including me, including every admin, including every veteran player that's been on the station for a year.  As counter intuitive as this might sound: stop it.  Let the doctor fail to revive you one time without bitching at him.  Let the engineer fuck up and shock himself.  Let mining die (you can't help it).  Every mistake pushes people to get better.  But it's important to remember that with every outburst and every yell of "worst medbay ever" may absolutely crush some poor clueless kids motivation and prevent them from reaching their full potential.

Now then, Security.  The biggest exception.  Security (or shitcurity) isn't just hard because of the power and responsibility; doctors and engineers also have power, except in different fields.  It's because it's so confrontational.  When you fuck up people will without fail call you shitcurity.  When you let them go they will continue calling you shitcurity.  Even when you were 100% in the right and justified you will still be called shitcurity.  It is without a doubt the most thankless, abused, and misunderstood job in this fucking game, and playing or maining it is honestly exhausting, emotionally draining, and sometimes straight up not fun.  People walking into that job for the first time not knowing what kind of hell that job is will be absolutely crushed.

Job timers are only the half of it.  They should be upped for security, or a bigger and bolder warning should be put on the job so that people fully understand why not to play it.  But honestly, if people truly want security to be better they're going to have to stop treating security like shit.  Good security players have thick skins by default so stop intentionally trying to break them and make them feel bad.  They won't lash out at you, they'll just give up on the job and leave.  You're not making it worth it.  Appreciate and respect them, and if you don't like what they're doing then go play the role yourself and set a good example to others instead.  And also don't be afraid to have fun sometimes as a sec officer: roleplay, dick around in the bar, let them miss a couple obvious antags because the department is a mess, understand the difference between a power trip and a legitimate mistake.

TL;DR: Game is fucked and chaotic, don't expect perfection from anyone.

Edit: I uh, almost forgot to add my opinions on the main suggestion

-Raise time for Security, other jobs are probably fine but Sec because yknow, abuse of power and also no one wants to play sec

-The station fundamentally hates sec so much anyways that I don't feel like any more incentives would bring anyone back unless they were security buffs.  Hey, the department changes made in the past 4 years (there's been like 2 reworks) might be enough for *myself* to start up the job again.

Pardon the rant and don't be afraid to respond to me, I didn't proof read.

  5. I planned to write something up longer as I normally do, but I forgot and then the term flipped over and my resignation got accepted, so here's the short version!

While I commonly do take extended breaks when I suffer from game/admin burnout, I unfortunately finally have to hang up my ban hammer for good due to needing to focus on my passion and career.  Ss13 is a unique, engaging, and insanely entertaining time sink that I'm grateful to have discovered and take part in.  Being on the Admin Team has been an absolutely amazing time and I don't regret a single second of it.  But unfortunately, while the game has been an amazing time-sink, it's still a time-sink that I'm going to have to break out of if I'm going to continue pursuing music as a career choice.  That being said, the damn game already sinked it's hooks into me, so I'll likely be back in 3 months or so as a normal player.

A couple things I do wanna get off my chest before I head off:

    1. @Allfd, @Regen, @Sanpd, @tigercat2000, @Crazylemon, @Fox McCloud, @Fethas, @Krausus, @VampyrBytes, @ZomgPonies, and everyone involved/previously involved in Coding features and/or physically keeping our server alive.  The behind the scenes nerds that I don't believe get thanked enough, and the nerds I really misunderstood until I joined up with staff.  These fucking guys sink hundreds and thousands of hours into making Paradise a better place for other players to play on.  I don't understand the first thing about how you guys do your job, but I do know that we wouldn't be around without them, and everyone should take some time out of their day to thank these idiots for continuing to help create hours of entertainment to shove down our throats.

    2. To the people intending on applying for Adminship.  The role isn't for everyone.  It requires patience and understanding, emotional-control, a strong stomach, and a lot of alcohol.  But again, I don't regret taking up the hammer.  Serving a community like this speaks for itself.  So I wish everyone the best of luck.  Oh, and I wrote up the interview process and questions, and specifically designed the entire thing so that everyone would fail except for players whose ckey started with the letter S.

    See you nerds later!

  6. As the Head of Security that shift, I will be providing my side of the story purely from the IC perspective.  I kept my contributions to the discussion the round after minimal due to conflict of interest.  I was also deadmined during this particular round.

Before the actual incident, the xray implants were provided to us by the RD in a locker.  LTH dragged the locker over to the brigbay themselves and placed me on a bed to perform surgery, which I declined because a Geneticist stabbed me with an xray gene modification earlier in the shift (Legal under Geneticist SoP section 3).

That shift, I was messaged by a civilian that he found 2 empty Adrenal and an empty Freedom implant cases in disposals maint.  I snatch them up and give them to the detective, who state that the fingerprints belonged to two Unathi that I can't recall the names of.  At the same time, Propane, a Plasmaman Officer, reports seeing cult runes off station, confirming that they're real.  Putting two and two together, I call for the Captain that we have cultists and to set us to red, and then set the two Unathi's to arrest in order to check them for implants.  This was the high priority of the day due to the contraband charges attached to both the Adrenal and Freedom implants.

Beepsky quickly captured both of them outside of the Science Hallway.  I head over there and ask for another officer to assist me so we can bring both of them to medbay to check for the implants.  LTH, the RD, is also outside the hallway with a Sechud, setting them off arrest.  They seemed to be under the impression that someone was randomly setting people to arrest with their own sechuds.  I explain that thats not the case and that they were both suspected to have used illegal implants due to their fingerprints being on the cases.  They and the captured Unathi argue that they were just cleaning up the implants, but I insisted on checking them anyways due to them possessing the only fingerprints on the cases, and there was still the potential of them to use the implants.  LTH uncuffed one of the Unathi in the process, citing how they could have used the freedom implant at any time to escape.  I recuff them due to the fact that there was only one freedom implant found in disposals, thus providing the possibility that one of them could have not had a freedom implant to begin with.

After a few minutes of circular arguing, two officers and a sec borg come over and aid me in dragging the two to medbay.  Once we get to medbay, LTH grabs one of the Unathi that I was dragging and uses her Adrenal implant to run back to science.  I order one of the officers to stay with the remaining Unathi, and then me and the two other security personnel rushed over to science.  Once we tried to get in, she set up a wall blocking us from entering, so we circle through toxins maint.

At this point, the other Unathi is nowhere to be seen, but LTH is, and since they've been aiding and abetting plus owned their own adrenal implant, we decided to go after the criminal we could see.  We managed to stun them a couple times in RnD, but failed to put handcuffs on due to the Adrenal implant.  They eventually get teleported into science maint due to the reactive teleporter armor.

Seeing as we tried and failed to capture her non-lethally, I order for Lethal force to be used and chase after her into the chapel.  I get too close, she stunbatons me and drags me to the bridge, where for some reason the BS cuffs me to the chair and the Captain, who still left the alert at green despite the confirmed cultists, berated me despite the fact.

I decide to just drop the incident, ignoring the protests of the other security officers, simply because I quickly figured that anything and everything would completely go over this Captains head.  The BS uncuffed me after I explained the situation, we decide to ultimately ignore the RD due to them not being worth the time, and we spend the rest of the round focusing on the Cult invasion in Cargo.

In all honesty, I think fictional names should be allowed if the characters aren't deemed overly famous.

Classic example - one of our admins didn't know who Jason Bourne is.

This is why I have a problem with something so subjective.

If it's "any name from fiction" then it's gonna be every name.

This isn't a problem at all.

On CM we run the no fictional names or famous names.

Generally how it works is a name is fine until someone complains about it. As soon as one person or staff says "Hey I recognize this name from something popular/famous" thats when action is taken.

Someone could use a famous name or a well known name, but if no one recognizes it or complains about it, then who the fuck cares.

We do the exact same thing with non-fictional names here. We don't scour the crew manifest, Google searching every name on the server; we'll just get an ahelp saying "Someone here is named Brad Pitt" and go to town.

I personally have left some non-fiction names alone due to the fact that only a few select people noticed it, and no one sent an ahelp complaint about them.

I've been pushing that we'll be enforcing fiction names in the exact same way.

Will this rule change anything? You might notice some different names, but overall the server isn't going to be reborn or anything due to the fact that Groots aren't running around the station. I just want this discussion to be done and over with because I've personally gotten sick of hearing about it for the past year.

  8.

Can't remember how I stumbled upon them, but I did.

I was personally thinking of making a few videos on my own YouTube channel doing the same concept back when I was a regular Head of Security player, but never got around to it for a few reasons. The most prevalent one was the fact that I achieved admin status and didn't have the time during regular rounds to play Security and administrate at the same time.

I have a feeling that if I did end up returning to play security and decided to make a video, it would be less informative and more of me swearing endlessly at my computer screen (as ze HoS does). Not to mention that I'm the least robust HoS regular to ever grace the server, I was mostly praised for management and reliability. Watching me play HoS would be a bit void of entertainment.

  9.

For the people that keep asking what the hell we're talking about when people scream out "Halogen absorbing meh in da morgue!"

Paradise has been around for 3 years now, and has built up a fairly large community. What inevitably comes with a large community is a large amount of inside jokes that we like to refer back to and reference in the Discord Chat, OOC, etc etc. So I figured why not have a thread that lists them off and recognizes them?

They can be well known events that everyone constantly refers to (the damn Halogen thing for example), or something minor that only a few players actually witnessed, but you still want to share (The Tigercat chicken story comes to mind).

    Go nuts.

  10.

(Authors note: VALKYR'S starting up his own little news report, which details events that happen on other NanoTrasen owned stations. These reports are announced in game, and then will be documented here so I can keep track of continuity (and also so no one misses out). A few of these will have events attached to them. I apologize about the formatting in advance: I hope to fix it up soon-ish. Enjoy!)

    Introduction

HELLO, CYBERIAD! VICE ADMIRAL VALKYR HERE!

AS MANY OF YOU ARE ALREADY AWARE OF, CENTCOMM IS IN CHARGE OF MULTIPLE STATIONS, RESEARCH AND OTHERWISE, ACROSS THE EPSILON ERIDANI SYSTEM! HOWEVER, THE NSS CYBERIAD IS OFTEN ISOLATED FROM THE OTHER STATIONS IN THE SYSTEM!

IN AN ATTEMPT TO UNIFY OUR VARIOUS EMPLOYEES ACROSS OUR FIFTEEN STATIO-UH.... FOURTEEN STATIONS, WE WILL PERIODICALLY BE PROVIDING NEW REPORTS AND STATUS UPDATES FROM YOUR NEIGHBOURS! WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE REPORTS, AND HAVE A GREAT DAY!

    Entry One

HELLO, CYBERIAD! VICE ADMIRAL VALKYR HERE!

IT HAS RECENTLY COME TO OUR ATTENTION THAT THE NSV LUNA HAS HAD ISSUES WITH THEIR CLONING MACHINES. THE MAIN CONSOLE OF THEIR CLONER MANAGED TO MALFUNCTION, AND HAS BEEN PRODUCING CLONES OF THE CREWMEMBERS WORKING ON THE VESSEL. NONE OF THE CREWMEMBERS ON THE NSV LUNA WERE DEAD AT THE TIME.

MORE ON THIS STORY AS IT DEVELOPS! IN THE MEANTIME, WE WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU CHECK YOUR CLONING MACHINES!

    Entry Two

HELLO! YET ANOTHER ISSUE OF THE TRURL TRIBUNAL: CC'S OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER ON THE EVENTS OF YOUR NEIGHBOURING STATIONS!

THE NSS REDEMPTION'S CAPTAIN, FRANK BLASCO, HAS RECENTLY MADE A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL NANOTRASEN STATIONS WITHIN THE EPSILON ERIDANI SYSTEM.

IN THIS ANNOUNCEMENT, HE BEGAN TO GO ON A LONG RANT ABOUT HOW OUR EYES ARE NOT REAL, AND ARE IMPLANTED INTO HUMANS BY BIRTH BY NANOTRASEN IN ORDER TO TRICK PEOPLE INTO THINKING THEY ARE MADE OF SOLID MATTER.

THE CAPTAIN THEN PROCEEDED TO TRANSFORM INTO THOUSANDS OF SMALL SPIDERS, WHICH THEN BEGAN TO ATTACK THE REMAINING CREW ON THE NSS REDEMPTION.

WE WOULD LIKE TO FIRMLY DENY THESE CLAIMS. YOU ARE ALL MADE OF REAL, SOLID MATTER. MORE REPORTS WILL BE MADE ABOUT THE NSS REDEMPTION AS THE SITUATION DEVELOPS!

    39. Getting fired out of the BSA for accepting the stripper request

    39. Playing chicken with a Xenomorph

    40. Playing chicken with anything except for the actual chicken

    41. Drinking alcohol without a liver (Fucking slime people)

    42. Flying a space pod near the massive "DO NOT APPROACH" signs near the shuttle docking bays

    43. Holding syndiesoap near shitcurity

While I don't think I can devote enough time to join the panel for this, would I allowed to give my input on questions?

Yes. There will be two chats running at the same time: the text channel on the discord, and the voice channel that we'll be using to speak in. The text channel is open for everyone to use, while the voice channel will only consist of the panel. This is mostly to cut down on audio memes and interruptions. You are free to answer any questions you want from the text channel side of things.

As a side note, I'm going to look into finding a way to record both the text chat and the audio chat this time, for the video logs.

Oh, also, Citinited, stop being a nerd and message me so I can just add you to the panel already. You don't have to speak throughout, you can just place your input from time to time.

  13.

We plan to be discussing and answering questions about the engineering department; Atmosia, proper room construction, power and how the hell it actually works, the turbine, the Super Matter, tips on building quality AutismForts, and possibly even Telecomms.

Last time we held a mini meeting, we also had a small little discussion prepared beforehand (Us talking about all of the laws in space law, which took about an hour). I believe that this meeting is going to be mostly question based. I never actually advertised the last mini meeting, so we didn't get an overwhelming amount of questions.

  14.

    We're doing this again!

The official time will be Saturday, September 24th, at 23:00 GMT. In order to join, simply go to the voice chat on the discord.

This is a half Q&A panel/half rant about the engineering department, in the voice chat. The actual content of the meeting is yet to be determined. The panel is going to consist of engineering players. If you would like to join this panel, send me a PM.

    The current panel is:

    SkyPing

    TullyBBurnalot

    Keroman

    SomanB

    GeneralChaos81

    RomanaTColgate

    Purpose2

    Psyentific

If you'd like to submit a question that you would like the panel to answer, PM me the question via discord. You can send me questions at any time during or before the meeting. I recommend sending any questions that you have to me in advance, especially complicated ones, just so that the panel will be ready to answer them if they need more time.

  15.

Metastation has been a work in progress for our code base for at least the past 9 months or so (possibly even longer). It's been taking so long to adapt because our code base is a unique, Frankenstein cross between Bay and /TG/ code, that everyone simply calls "Paracode." We've been slowly but surely adjusting MetaStation, part by part, in order to make it compatible with our code base.

We've run Meta Station as a map a few times; once in December, once in June/July. Both times have recieved mixed reviews and have resulted in numerous bugs being reported.

There are a few things that stand in its way currently. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the project head, Tigercat2000, has recently retired. I believe FreeStylat has picked up the project again to some sort of capacity, but as far as I'm aware, no ones working on it full time at the moment. There also is the fact that some people may simply not want to switch over to Metastation from Box Station.

Other coders/staff members/etc (I'm probably the least qualified person to talk about this) can elaborate/correct my points/toss in their comments. Just know that, yes, Meta Station is a thing that we are aware of and have made progress towards implementing.

  16.

This is actually a a nerf to antags. It can prevent the ability for any degree of stealth. For example if it's known there is cult on station and off station travel is banned or limited to certain people.

    I mean... yes.

That's the entire point. He even directly mentions it.

Antags: Let's face it. The science outpost is an antag clubhouse. These announcements pinging science comms should help keep things a little more clean on science. That said, there should be a way to disable these notices, but harder than simply emagging a console (perhaps cutting a wire in one of those transponders used at the remote stations).

This is something we don't want, something we constantly get complaints about, and something that I'm glad people are looking into changing.

Not to mention that the Cargo shuttle notifications would be nice as well. It could lead to less gibbed miners. It will also give CT's more of a heads up as to where the cargo shuttle is (Anyone that plays cargo will constantly ask themselves "Huh, did I not send the shuttle back?").

Overall, +1, but with the feature freeze in place I don't know if this is possible to add.

  17.

[Psst; it's over. Link to part one is here:

    ]

    What is this?

A community meeting type thing with a focus on security, and run by Regular/Semi-Regular Security players. This meeting is designed to help ease potential players into (arguably) one of the most difficult departments in the game, as well as helping people gain a bit more context into the purpose of the department. The meeting is, as usual, open to everyone, whether you're a security veteran, or have never held a baton before in your life.

We'll be splitting the meeting into three parts (possibly more):

    1. We'll briefly go over every law in Space Law, and their intended context. Yep. Every law.

    2. We'll talk about common antag procedures, so you guys know what to do when you have that Vampire or Changeling in processing.

    3. Answer questions! Send them to me via discord PM's during the meeting. This'll probably take up the bulk of the meeting.

The current panel is (subject to change):

Ping [Well, it was his idea]

    TullyBNerdalot [The Spesslaw Expert]

    ColdFlame [bestHoS]

    Sasanek [Professional Catbeast]

    Counterfeitguise [Probably A Witch]

    Faceplant-Kun [security Cheat-code]

    FallingHero [still Dead]

    Cobradude [insert 19% Joke Here]

Pinata [They're now on the Pane-THEY'RE ON THE FUCKING PANEL SHUT UP]

Shoot me a discord PM if you want to join the panel. You guys know who are.

The official meeting time is Sunday, September 4th at 9pm GMT, on the Discord. Simply join the group chat to join!

I think that's it. See you all there!

[Wrote this on a phone, sorry about the poor formatting. Will fix in a few hours]
