The main issue is there is no objective mechanic for when red alert can and cannot be called.  The only criteria is when 'hell is breaking loose' which is entirely subjective.  And the people making that entirely subjective assessment are the same people with a vested interested in red alert being called.  That's a potential problem unless the admins are stepping in to prevent abuse.

Note @necaladun's proposal to make calling red require two IDs + an admin approval, like an ERT.

You probably know most of this already, but humor me.

This is less spite, and more simple obnoxiousness, but still incredibly annoying. Personally when dealing with people like these, I'm really nervous about ever taking handcuffs off their hands att all. You just know these are people who'd attack you the second they can.

If you even suspect the person your brigging will give you trouble, it's more or less standard procedure to alt-click the turf, have your flash ready, remove cuffs, flash the instant they're off, grab them from the turf menu and exit the cell.

As far as security being bad and people treating security like garbage: Bad security is often present but will be kept in check, meaing being stuck naked in perma wordlessly will happen next to none. There is a dedicated corps of security regulars, but their numbers are kept low because the greytide here means a very high turnover rate (not to mention we lost a lot of our security regulars during our unlisted time) and dealing with tiders in red all the time.

Also, Head staff is looking at increasing the number of admins, meaning there will be more available to address aHelps like the one you sent.

As far as people's behavior in general, well..

There is a good segment of the playerbase here that treats it as a sort of baystation lite- they will play a reasonable character with some depth, but ultimately derive their enjoyment from the challenges of the game. These players have fun by playing the game, but aren't really focused on "winning" by hoarding items, chemc, armor, etc. They are the type of people who, if they greytide, will do so with a fun gimmick or routine in mind.

Then there are the more /tg/-Hippie style players; They know that the game has many interesting and powerful mechanics, and tend to focus on them over interactions. These are sometimes your "play to win" type players.

Then there is the tide that just wants to see the world burn (or are to new to the game to know any better).

The reason Gamma is so rarely called is due to the armoury and borg modules. I'd actually love to be able to call it more easily without those.

And that's what new Red will allow for essentially. :)

    Sound good?

The best I could see would be a form of ERT request - that 2 heads swipe for it with a reason, then the admins can accept/deny it. It'd still need some non-ambiguous, well worded criteria that it can be requested in, and more importantly, when it ends. What force can be used extra then also needs to be well defined.

I have no problems with that. It is not like the Code Red we are used to, so for there to be a tad more precautions makes sense.

I just don't want it to the mythical Code Gamma that I have seen called 4 times in my roughly two and a half years here- three of which were for a blob and the other one being @Fruerlund's meteor event. We see it is almost never called to counteract the breakdown of social order it is really meant to serve as when you say "marital law".

Ironically that's why we have less veteran security. It's because security is under such a tight microscope. Though changing that would break more than it would fix.

Think of it this way: Sec will be held to the same vigorous standard as before, but there's actually a reason why they need to be policed as hard as they do. :P

And I think a lot of security players do not get burned out because they are held to a standard, they're disheartened that it's such an insanely different standard than the tide with no rewarding IC reparations. In recent months, mind you, admins have been a bit more relaxed in that department- letting a few harmbatons slide if the victim is really a turd, but there's still the issue of going through hell and back to arrest the assistant who broke on to the bridge on red so they can SSD immediately upon capture(or they'll break the windows while sec tries to get the antag the tider distracted them from to begin with).

It's just a fact. I personally have trust issues when it comes to security,

As you well should, seeing as sec has been perpetually staffed by noobs. I do sympathize though, being a HOS main.

I have had to deal with to many occasions where they have gone off the rails.

There is an issue with the Captain/Security power dynamic, and that needs to be addressed. I am open to any suggestion you might have to help the Captain keep Security on a tighter leash.

  6. @Saul Argon

Yes, there is a problem with the average Security goon being played by a newbie.

Yes, there will be abuse resulting from a weapons-free IC policy.

However, the security regulars will never be more than a tiny cadre unless the tide is brought to heel.

And any shitsec will last much less longer as we get more admins to keep things from devolving into a complete mess.

In truth this would make going to red be treated as going to gamma is now, except not need admin approval.

    Yes, it will be gamma.

Yes, it will be without prior admin approval.

However, there is still the threat of admin intervention if abused. (And there will be plenty of admins with apps coming up).

And as the traditional red procedures are still under red, you can still up your game without going Judge Dredd.

Lastly, if you do not want security neutralizing any threat with extreme force, don't call the new red, call Blue(old red)

  8. This is prolly the redshirt in me talking, but I think this will be very useful.

Captains always jump to the current Code Red over every little thing, which gives security powers that really aren't that great and a mandate to keep everyone indoors without getting called shitcurity. It really should be code blue.

Martial law really is what red was meant to be, IMO, and will really cut down on superfluous shuttle calls and red declarations.

I expect a lot of pushback against this, but when we have 30 assistants and 12 traitors in any given round, a sterner hand is needed to put things back in order. I stand by code red truly being the HOLY SHIT EVERYTHING IS CRAZY, SECURITY DO SOMETHING alert level.

    Hail Brigston.

  9. Necaldun is using the imaginary CM manager "Feweh", a fiction he created, to control the flow of players with SS13, institute a global bans system, and consolidate his control over paradise.

    Proof:

    Necaldun is Feweh!1!!!!!11!!11

He then admits to blatant corruption:

Maybe a more undercover officer garb for those who don't want to be obvious in their snooping

For now, try Dispatcher uniform or just wear civvies. Though a low-profile uniform would be nice.

  11. Yeah, I can see where going wild as an antag can shaft other antags who want to go about their objectives a crafty way.

Being the most destructive you can be usually does not equate to entertaining and creative. Unless you have hijack, in which case you are to be destructive, but must be clever and thorough.

  12. Maybe re-add webbings for sec.

And thigh holsters. That'd be nice.

I've been playing a good bit of Bay as of late, and I think its a nice way to carry your essential gear that doesn't fit in your belt.

Not that you'd need it during one of Bay's six hour extended rounds.

While I do think it would be good to add voluntary manslaughter, I wonder if because of the way laws are set up right now if it would make any difference in sentencing. I think offering a special circumstance to manslaughter might be better and allow for less harsh sentencing more effectively as well as causing less confusion.

    REEEE
The whole point of this is that voluntary manslaughter is the only thing covered under the current law.

I think Criminal Negligence would make a nice 15 minute catch-all crime for stuff above workplace hazard, but not willful sabotage.

  14. Insofar as I can tell, the manslaughter law enacted presently deals with voluntary manslaughter wherein the perpetrator means the victim harm but does not mean to kill them.

If the HoP, fed up with the QM's corruption and inefficiency, beats them with their baton -leading them to die from their injuries- when the intent to kill was never present, they are guilty of voluntary manslaughter.

However, what about when someone dies as a result of incompetence, not malice? Does the QM commit manslaughter when he accidentally disables the safety feature on a mulebot and it runs down some scientist? Does the surgeon who fails to hook up a blood supply to patient with internal bleeding, causing them to expire on the table? Or what about that baldie MD who gibs an otherwise clonable body with SR?

I would propose a law being added which essentially covers involuntary manslaughter. Not sure if it should be major or exceptional.

    Edit- @TullyBBurnalot

  15. So, the Marines hired a known gangster, who then was hired by NT, including some security and Head of Staff positions, despite being a known communist and criminal.

Hmm. NT standards are lax, but...

  16. Hah ha.

You nerds will have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get your precious loot.

We don't have that problem in security- Hail Brigston.

    Spoiler

    ;)

This is a shitpost if you've not already guessed. I don't know anything about RnD, but hope the new changes work out well.

In a role-playing context. Your on a scientific space station around some gas giant, with a crew of ethnically diverse species and peoples. Of course they would all speak unique languages and dialects. Drawing from my own personal experiences of going to a European university, different languages are par for the course especially in scientific persuits with students from across the world. As for it being hard to understand, I think that's kinda half the fun of languages. But hey that's just my opinion.

Just remove xeno from premises, that will fix this heresy snowflake nonsense dead in it's tracks.

And no more lizard-man mafia running the station

The point is that when you break space law while there's nothing going wrong, you get security people wondering if you are an antag, while they are looking into you and what you're up to, they're not paying proper attention to everyone else, giving Antags some breathing room in the beginning of the round.

I think the issue here is that's not your call to make. The admins will give you plenty of breathing room for shenanigans if you ask them, but going about deliberately trying to distract security is self-antagging, at least to a certain degree. Antagonists are the people designated to spice up the round.

That said: Want to engage in some shady activity? If you have a good IC reason, the admins will more than likely let it slide, but communicating with them and getting approval is key.
