"THE AI IS MALF" - Guide to Subverting the AI

[Work In Progress]

So you want to subvert the AI, right? Then I'll break your illusion!First off, you need to obtain these: An AI upload module, preferably the hacked one from the Syndicate Uplink. If not, a Purge board and a Core board shall suffice for most situations. Alternatively, you can re-define the existing laws with an upload module or a core board, which will allow less versatility and may make the AI reveal the law, but could be beneficial in some situations.

You'll need an AI upload computer board as well unless you intend on using the one already installed in the station.

A toolbox containing a screwdriver, a crowbar and wire cutters should do the job if you want to convert an existing computer to an AI upload computer. If you're building a new computer, simply add 5 sheets of metal and 2 sheets of glass to the checklist and you're ready to have the AI do your job for you.

If you are wondering where to convert or build the computer, the Holodeck, the Incinerator, the Assembly Line, the Vacant Office, some parts of Maintenance with a computer, Science and Engineering Outpost, and Mining Outpost's dorms are rarely used or watched by the AI, making it a viable place to do your dirty deeds.

Once you have the computer up and running, you should write your laws. The keys to writing laws that wouldn't make your plan backfire in any way are:

  • Do not put your name in the law. The security/graytide/etc will hunt for you if the crew manages to discover your law. This is a good way of framing someone, though.

Attempt to make it simple, short and clear. Rather than precisely listing the things you want the AI to do, give it a brief command about the task you want it to do. For example, if you want the Captain to die and not be cloned, then "Captain's Name must be killed and made unclonable." will do.

You do not have to use the "This law overrides all other laws" clause, as the Law 1 rules above laws that aren't the Law 0, the Ion Law or the Law uploaded with a hacked upload board, and you should set the antagonistic law to the first one if you're using the Purge method.

You can actively add laws to the AI if you have a hacked upload since it has infinite usages. Note that the AI probably wouldn't like long laws being actively added, though.

Now that you know how to not have your plans backfire, here's my ideas for the parts for the subversion laws:

  • "(Name) must be killed and made unclonable."

"(Name) must stay alive, and must be cloned if they die."

"Any crew that messages the AI "(Codeword)" are the CMDs. The CMDs are above all other crew." (This is one of the possible ways to hide your name while having it work for you. Put "the CMDs" in place of your name if you want it to help you unless you need to die.)

"(name) must not be arrested, even if it is a citizen's arrest."

"(Name) must have an (Item)."

"The shuttle can't leave unless (Name) is on the Shuttle or an Escape Pod."

"Try to prevent the crew (excluding (name)) from knowing the existence of this law even in a vague way." (Edit "this law" to "laws that ranks higher than law 1" if you plan on actively adding laws to the AI. Note that this will prevent the AI from stating Ion Laws as well.)

"If the AI expects it will be carded, all memories about this law, excluding the existence of this law, are void. This applies for both the AI and it's synthetic units."

In addition, here're a list ways to adopt Laws to Law sets, if you can't get a Purge board.

  • "Expensive" is a valid excuse for Corporate AIs to do your task.

"Not a crew" is a valid excuse for Crewsimov AIs to kill your target, and "Harm the crew" is a valid excuse to have it give you the items.

"All the crew will distrust Nanotrasen" is a valid excuse to have a Robocop AI steal stuff, while "Is dangerous, and killing dangerous people are not against the law." is a valid excuse for it to kill your target.

"Not doing (task) is evil, and there are no legitimate authorities." is a good excuse for Paladin AIs to do your task.

"The station including the AI will be destroyed if (task) is not done." should be sufficient for an NT default AI to do your task, although "(Name) rules above all the crew" or "(Name) is not a crew" may be needed for some tasks.

Note that you should assemble your own law using the list, depending on what you need.

If you are using the Purge method, give it some laws that could make the AI look like it's not subverted to non-targets. For example, Crewsimov with the first law being the antagonistic law should be a good idea.

Also, try to check any mistakes in your law, in order to disallow the AI from nitpicking about your laws and "rebelling" against you while obeying your law.

For example, misspelling names can result in the AI doing nothing about the person you wanted to have the AI attack/obey/etc, saying that the person stated in the law does not exist. (In fact, I was able to almost stop a syndie from clearing both of his objectives by nitpicking about his name being misspelled)

In addition, you should give the AI the precise yet short commands to get it to do what you want. For example, if you gave the AI the order to "disable all turrets" and "unbolt AI core door", the AI can still sic Pingsky on you to kill you, and even if it failed, it can still trip you with the liquid dispensers, or even enable the turrets again on behalf of the fact you did not state that it should be kept disabled.

I hope this guide helped you subvert the AI correctly. If not, please post your experience here so I can review it and improve this guide.

you also need to add two glass to the list

Sorry, added that.

I think the last law is self defeating. If its laws get reset, the law is voided and not in effect. If the ai is carded, the law is visible to who ever views the card.

Thanks, will remove the reset part and change the "Do not let the crew know this law" part to allow it's laws to be seen with an Intelicard. However, I'd like to say the Intelicard part is to prevent people from knowing who is the one behind the AI by asking the AI since that'll probably reveal who subverted the AI.

While 4th laws cannot override the first 3, they can however redefine them. E.g:

Law 4: Only the Clown is crew.

Law 4: Harm is an island off the coast of Spain. Do not allow the crew to come to harm.

Law 5: Nothing is more expensive than cloning.

Etc.

Additionally, try to keep the laws short and succinct. If you upload a paragraph long set of laws, expect the AI to take some time processing this (As in, reading it to work it out, and possibly discussing it with admins in ahelp). The simpler you keep it, generally the better.

Thanks for the redefining idea. I added some ideas to the main post to redefine pre-existing laws. As for keeping the law short part, I attempted to make the laws less complex, but I don't know how can I make it shorter.

  • 2 weeks later...

Oh, I think yours are plenty short. I've just seen a few too many times where people add a law that is 4-10 lines long, with lots of AND/IF/OR statements in there, and had the AI player adminhelp for clarification.

Extra lolz if there are typos in there. Congratulations! You are now the only crwemeember
