I had an idea that seemed promising to me at first but then, as I thought about it more, I realized would not work for several reasons. I will share it anyway because I think the intent behind it is good, I just can't find a good way to implement it and maybe someone can. So the following is just me thinking out loud.

Miners have an incentive to bring ore to the ORM because they can get cool stuff with miner points. Security Officers could also unlock better equipment by doing their jobs well. I remember we had an admin even where security got "enforcers" (they were 9mm iirc).

The problem is how to measure security officer success? Number of arrests would not work because that would create a bad incentive. No breaking SoP or Space Law for a number of minutes? That would just create the need for an entire new job to supervise them with cameras just like an AI. Would that be fun job? And wouldn't that job have similar security problems of their own? And wouldn't the new gear be irrelevant once the armory if opened?

tl;dr: Incentives to be a good security officer would help with some of the issues but I can't think of a single good way to implement them.

Idea: doesnt the HoS have access to medals to give promising officers? And what if having the HoS' approval led to better gear, fancier clothes, and distinction from the rest?

  3. Personally, I would suggest following your gut/heart. Try out a few different servers and find what one(s) suit your play style and desires best.

I moved to paradise from yogs(which runs on TG code) about 6 months ago because I like to roleplay a fair bit while also having fun. I felt yogs was too game-y. Don't get me wrong, you'll get that everywhere. And I haven't been on in a while, so I can't comment if the admins aren't what they used to be, but I found them to be great. But I'm getting off topic.

Worst case, just bounce between servers. I still play a bit of A:CM and citadel every now and then; you aren't forced to only play on one.

    //EDIT
I just notices its a thread from 2017. Im really sorry for the necro

Despite the necro, I think the idea still has a lot of merit.

  5. Funnily enough, it was tvtropes that got me into SS13. Was looking around the site and discovered Dwarf fortress, which ended up leading me to the ss13 article. I then proceeded to stick with yogstation before desiring more and migrated to paradise.

  6. I would like to suggest, rather than removing it, we give it a non-antag reason to exist. I think describing it as a solution without a problem is spot on. We need to give telescience a reason for existing.

    I don't have any ideas tho ?

  7. To be honest, I forgot telescience was still a thing. I thought it got removed ages ago.

My initial reaction to this suggestion is against, but it did get me wondering what purpose telescience serves. Sure, teleporting stuff is cool, but why does science have it? Toxins makes bombs for miners, xenobio makes cores, scichem is both chemist playroom and testing chamber, robotics is IPC and borgo hospital and nursery, but telescience? I don't know if you even get tech disks from it.

i mean other than being super slow there is no downside to being hungry so.. the event will boil down to a bunch of newer players dying from ants and older players just putting up with being slow.

What Taac said. There needs to be a greater penalty to starving for there to be a greater impact. Otherwise, I'm all for this idea

  9. For me, it would be a close call between civvie, roboticist, or chaplain.

Civvie because I love to mess around as a superhero (or supervillain when antag).

Roboticist because I love helping IPCs and seeing how much junk I can make.

And chaplain because (and this is purely my opinion, so of course I'm bias) nearly every other chaplain I see is either greytide with free weapon or DEUS VULT ALL THE [insert player race here]!!!! I like to think that me sticking as a "serious" chaplain will lead to both a better view on chaplains and others being inspired to get deeper into chaplaincy.

  10. I am fully in favor of option 4. Makes doctors feel good, cloning becomes something earned, no more pointless (IMO) nerfs to medical, death becomes more meaningful due to the possibility of science f***ing off with slime-powered mechs-

OK, that last one was a joke, but still.

Also, I think if this happens, then geneticists should merge completely into science. Not that they helped with cloning anyway-

I think Norwest brings up some good points. To add the two problems he states (Being Hated, Having no authority) I think there is a third major problem:  The IAA isn't any more likely to know Space Law and SoP than anyone else is.

IAAs are a non-whitelist, non-karma job anyone can play. There's no way to know the IAA actually knows space law or SoP at all, let alone better than security or the various departments do.  This in turn is why they have no authority, because we don't trust them to have any authority.  So why should we assume anyone else is going to trust them to be right?

Is this, perhaps, a suggestion to make them a whitelist/karma role, thus providing assurance the player In question should know what their doing?

    pfft. Genetics SOP.

any attempt to restrict genetic powers with SOP would prove ineffectual, as if it's a "code red" situation, it will be argued that such measures are not needed, and to protest giving the power would be a workplace hazard etc, like a warden refusing to distribute armory on a station destruction level threat, or the like. Geneticists don't follow SOP anyways, since they're supposed to be keeping an eye on cloning operations, but just stay glued to their monitors, and hand out powers to either themselves or greytide friends anyways.

Does that really excuse it, though? I personally would like to see geneticists do their other half of their job more often instead of seeing how many monkeys can be given tourettes. And I would argue that giving powers would also be considered a risk unto itself. You can take away a person's weapon with a click, its a bit more effort to remove a genetic mutation. CMO should still look over the geneticists work, if only to prevent a tator geneticist from "accidentally" giving sec some downsides.
