  1. Well its early morning, I thought I'd look in and see what the discussion is here and decided I'd throw my two cents in on the subject.

    Realism:

I see this being thrown around a lot by individuals both arguing for and against it. What surprises me about the argument is that while it is indeed a game, realism does need to have a presence for it to work to some degree. A world needs a set of rules to properly function and allow for immersion otherwise you'd be relying solely upon a suspension of disbelief which can only go so far.

On SS13 you work for a Mega Corporation aboard one of their many stations. This corporation is known for its unscrupulous practices, shady dealings, and need to reach the bottom line of profit much like any other large corporation you could think of in reality. Realistically speaking, from the point of view of any corporation, especially one that already has unscrupulous practices, the use of an item which is proven to have no detrimental side-effects to the health of crew or pose any major threat to the structural integrity of its assets would immediately be authorized for use if and only if it served to protect its interests where in this case it would since it would be aiding in the capture of individuals whose sole mission is to run counter the interests of the corporation.

The arguments against the use of the key, while valid, would disrupt the realism of the situation and break the immersion factor of playing the game since there really isn't a valid argument (IE: An argument that could be made that would favor NT's interests that involved NOT using the key.)

On the reverse side, I would think that the Syndicate would issue these items with a fail-safe feature that either allowed the destruction of the key should the item be compromised or a lock-out feature should the item fall into the wrong hands. The former perhaps being a small electrical charge that can be activated to fry the circuitry the latter in the form of perhaps a password that needs to be entered to activate/deactivate similar to the uplink.

    Game Balance:

It really does skew the balance of antagonists and security more in security's favor however it doesn't irreparably do so by shifting the law in such a way. It all depends on whether or not the encryption key is being used and by how many who are using it since Security can really only listen in if an agent has the key and is actively using it.

It can also be balanced out with the suggestions made before by obscuring the names of the agents on the comms or with the ones I suggested previously by allowing the item itself to have a lock out system or a simple destruction method to give the agent a chance to prevent the network from being compromised. Even without those changes though, an individual can remove their ID, use the comm when its compromised, and so long as what they're talking about doesn't give away their immediate location should otherwise be fine if Security has compromised it. Or if I'm remembering the previous idea incorrectly the usage of a voice changer can also help to further obfuscate the user's identity and may even allow the agent to use the compromised comms to their benefit if they manage to trick Security into arresting an individual completely unrelated due to comm chatter.

In the end though, i think it isn't a bad change to how the game will be played and can open up many new interesting doors for both Security and Agents in how their approach their roles.

    Use of other Contraband:

This one is rather easily explained away both for IC reasons and OOC reasons. The IC reasoning, as Necaladun pointed out, the corporation would want to keep the telecrystals for their own purposes and the lower ranked employees shouldn't take it upon themselves to decide whether or not the usage of the crystals are warranted and what they can be used for.  To further elaborate on this, I think the Corporation who would be aware of the contraband since they listed it as such, wouldn't allow Security to use it for the reasons that it could pose a serious hazard to the crew resulting in possible lawsuits or even worse actually paying the employee reparations for the use of dangerous equipment along with the fact that most items could also heavily compromise the station integrity or the integrity of assets upon the station (IE: Machinery, computers, resources in general.) causing a further loss to their bottom line since not only would they lose out on the telecrystals they've now lost more because of damages wrought by the items purchased using them.

For said items that could be purchased that are considered non-lethal like ammunition, soap, even briefcases of money, NanoTrasen wouldn't authorize simply based on the fact that the company could provide all these items for the individuals without the need to expend telecrystals for them (Though I highly doubt they will when it comes to the briefcase of money).

OOC reasoning, just because one item is being allowed to be used doesn't necessitate the need for the other items to receive the same blanket as the first. There are perhaps a handful of items that could feasibly be used for a legitimate purpose that isn't antagonistic but even then it would be completely situational (IE Singularity Beacon to draw the Singularity back into Containment, Thermal Imaging Glasses to track down terror spiders when hunting them, Advanced Pin Pointer to locate a stash of high value items that have yet to be recovered or to track down an item misplaced by a Department Head) which at that point it should entirely be at the discretion of the admins whether it is asked via ahelp or through faxing Central Command since the use of all of these items for these reasons could easily disrupt the balance of the game out of favor of the antagonists currently playing (Engine release on Hijack, Player Controlled Spiders, Items that aren't stashed and actively held by still at large agents).

    Conclusion:

I think that it is a very interesting change that one the surface while it doesn't seem like it could favor the agents and stacks the game against them could prove to open up new possibilities for them if they apply a little thought to the situation at hand. Remember that it isn't about completing the objectives as an agent its about making the game fun and interesting for everyone with how you approach the role. While a compromised Encryption Channel may make it a little more difficult to co-ordinate and accomplish those objectives it can also give you a new and interesting approach to them.

    History:

NanoTrasen keeps a tight reign on his background, whether it was at his own request or at the request of his superiors only a few within Central Command are privileged enough to know it.

Official documents released to the public has his history starting from when NanoTrasen acquired him from Moghes, where after lengthy medical stay he found work within their Law Department as an assistant, filing papers, sorting, retrieving books for the various Agents and Magistrates.

Being well read and with a decent education it didn't take him long to get a grasp of Space Law and Operating Procedure that rivalled many of the Agents and even some Magistrates. His calm personality and tendency to enjoy paperwork had served him well within the department and he quickly found himself officially employed in Internal Affairs as one of their Agents.

Eventually after several reports of various issues, some even including fellow Internal Affairs Agents, he was deployed to the NSS Cyberiad to watch and report back the operations of the staff and when necessary even the Command.

After some time spent on the NSS Cyberiad working in their Law Office and occasionally in the Medical Department, he has received a promotion from the NT High Court to the position of Magistrate. While excited by the new job trepidation was felt, as it was a job that he knew could easily make him more enemies than it did friends.

though how does it factor in as well with the wording of "complete your objectives at all costs"?

I think its less about restricting the AI's ability to complete the objectives and more about slowing down the escalation of it a little.

If the AI makes the correct preparations without alerting the crew that its malfunctioning it could literally nuke the station successfully more times than not, particularly if there aren't individuals experienced in handling such to balance it out.

Its also about basically ending the round over two assassination targets as well. It leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth that because two individuals have to die the entire round has to end.

I suppose it fits in with interpretation. ALL costs can be interpreted in multiple ways I think the issue is that some will notice they have the green light to nuke the station and will favor that over other strategies because its an effective way to immediately kill their targets without fail.

  5. PDA Tickler Cartridge

Brand new syndicate item! For the low low price of 5 TC you can get your very own PDA Tickle Cartridge which gives you 4 charges. Working similarly to the PDA bomb, select your target and as long as their messenger is on, you can send a virus to their PDA to tickle them with a percent chance of inflicting death, with a greater chance if the target receives another tickle!

Every tick for 10-15 ticks, on the first attempt is a 5% chance of death with a 10% stun chance and a 30% chance to drop items being held with every subsequent application doubling the chance!

Why murderbone and leave someone salty when you can put them in the ground with a smile on their face?

  6. Hand Held Long Range Fax

No longer will the crew and IAA be confined to the Law Office to send ass pictures to Central, now its even designed to conveniently only fit picture sized objects within them and with an easy swipe of any ID to be unlocked and given a direct channel to CentComm.

Warning: Side effects may include BSA strikes, Cluwning, sudden gibbing, spontaneous combustion, or a possible date with a Naval Officer.

  7. I think Doomsday should be used solely as a 'last resort' option when its in play. I agree that using it for assassination objectives is a bit overkill. Mainly a check-list of different things needs to be conducted before it should be in play in my opinion.

Does the AI have any loyal minions to carry out its tasks?

If not does the AI have the ability to acquire loyal minions?

If not what're the chances of successfully carrying out the assassination targets without notice or within reasonable parameters of rising suspicion?

What is the chance of manipulating the crew into carrying out the tasks for you?

I feel that if this list is exhausted then resorting to Doomsday Tactics would be wholly acceptable since the AI would be unable to carry out its objectives either because they would immediately be found out as Malfunctioning and carded and/or the absolute lack of resources to carry out the task at hand.

  9. Pox the Vox:

A little voxxy mascot that goes around declaring the virtues of Vox and their general culture and history to better acclimate the crew to working with their avian co-workers.

Also Pox the Vox will regularly make vox noises such as coughing/sneezing, rustling of the quills, and skreeeing, when they have nobody to talk to.

Pox also has no life bar and thus can never be killed.

There's already an IAA rigsuit so that should be part of it...

Please tell me it comes complete with a megaphone so that when you get the IAAs that're trying to order everyone around they can be extra annoying useful.

  11. Space Adhesive: A chemical that is the polar opposite of Space Lube, instead of slipping an individual who steps on a tile affected by it, Space Adhesive slows them down to a crawl. When paired with items that weigh you down and mag boots, watch the game become turn based without the need of lag interfering.
