How to play Xenoarcheologist?

I have chosen once a role of Xenoarcheologist. I was expecting that there would be some sort of distant space outpost to conduct research, but there was any. The access to asteroid shuttle was blocked.
So what is the point of this role? Is it just a generic scientist with access to science dept?
