Doesn't mean that it is a good thing

It only means that your phrase has no meaning without adressing anything specific.

Well mostly it makes claims about specific races that are not backed up by anything in game. The Kida article claims they cannot drink caffeine with getting really sick. Most players will miss this note, and because it isn't reinforced in game it just creates inconsistencies.

What's wrong with the current stuff? A lot reads pretty good and feels quite good, so why abandon it?

Improve what's there and if you've got specific problems with some species then adress them.

There are quite a few that make claims about the species with no in game mechanics to back them up

Which is true for almost all RPGs?

"Elves are the best at everything they do" - fluff; "Elves get a few boni and mali, making them about average" - crunch. It's really typicall i'd say. Though yes i think there are a few cases where one could complain somewhat about Crunch and Fluff not fitting all to well.

Problem with puzzles is: you can just find a direct walkthrough on the internet

Oh, and I have an idea for a solarium-like thing: something to do with NT sectretely being evil and at the end of puzzles there being some form of gigantic bluespace catasprophe that's very !!FUN!!

I don't think NT being evil is a secret

And the puzzles will need to be difficult to execute physically as well as hard to figure out to over come this.

lets try to string this together. first on the research outpost is a spaceship that works like the syndie-ship and can travel to different locations with variable enviroments (some being dangerous) and obstacles...and robust mobs.

put it all on a admin Z level so you cant teleport there...or scrap the spaceship and make a new z level for telescience to find all the locations...this is where the telesci math puzzles come in.

Why not both? Put a separate telescience station on the new Z axis to allow access to more parts of the dungeon via telescience puzzles.

Pen&Paper= Nerds sit around a table and roll dice while rustling their sloppily written character sheets and carefully made rulebooks.

Tabletop= Nerds sit around the table and roll dice while rustling their carefully painted miniatures and sloppily written rulebooks.

    lmao, best definition ever.

I prefer Pen & Paper, as that's roleplay, rather than just a game.

I imagine it as a bit like playing SS13 in hotkey mode, versus autochat mode.

When you are in autochate (pen & paper) you role play way better

When you are in hotkey mode you are way better at combat. Which was never that fun or engrossing anyways.

    That analogy sound right?

Maybe, just MAYBE, we could find out a way to somehow randomize it, kind of like certain other games do...

A good example would be Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Every floor is completely randomized, never the same no matter how many times you travel through the same dungeon.

Don't know how badass someone would have to be to code that, though.

Randomized dungeons work best in combat oriented dungeon crawlers, not puzzle ones. The problem with this is designing a balanced dungeon is damn near impossible if it is random, and the combat system in SS13 isn't helping.

    Had a puzzle idea.

Imagine there was an abandoned telescience lab in the dungeon. The pieces for it are scattered about the dungeon, many of which are guarded by monsters. As they begin to piece it together and get it operational they would realize they are short several bluespace crystals. With only one in the machine they would notice some new GPS units. One would be in range of the weakened teleporter, the other very far away. The one in range would be the gateway/teleporter back to the station, and the other would be the harder part of the dungeon. Meaning they would have to go back and work with the station to get more crystals.

    Which do you prefer?

the pen and paper games are great. I tried a bit of the tabletop wargame but it's far too expensive for me. The only tabletop games I can ever seen to get are from old friends on /tg/ and sigurd who invite me to their rogue trader and dark heresy games.

Can someone explain the difference between tabletop and pen and paper?

Okay so there was some talk a while back about some mechanics of being re spawned as a villager on a away mission. that is a thing

another would be some dank ass treasure for science to work together to get using a super new away mission. Combine the skills of xenoarch, xenobio, robotics,r&d, telesci, and toxins to make some badass dungeon style away missions.

We could transport to the slime home world

Vox Shoal could be a possibility.

GO TO THE WIZARD FEDERATION HEADQUARTERS (PLZ YES)

I really like this idea, as it could be used in conjuction with the proposed lore changes. Getting to go and see the world's of each race would be neat.

The dungeon design would be tough, and getting it to utilize the combined might of the station is even harder. However, the dungeon should still be passable without it, but it should unlock more content. This way unprepared players are not trapped foforever and experienced players are not too bored.

I really liked some of the environmental puzzles of the clown planet (Ice doors) but they were a tad too easy.

When thinking of away missions/dungeons I think it is important to keep in mind what assets we have already.

    - We have beach assets that are only used in the holodeck that would make a cool ocean/beach world.

    - Sand and Sand stone for a dessert

    - Grass and trees for some kind of forrest thing

    - Snow and Ice for a cold planet with better balance and design than the clown planet

    - A variety of NPC monsters that are only used in anomaly events. This includes: Samaks, Space bears, Hivebots, Goldgrubs, drones, and more. Each could be placed occasionally in each dungeon to create some atmosphere, and challenge.

A focus on dungeon design would also help the balance issues associated with the clown planet. Currently lings and vamps can go and use it as a one stop shop for powering up (assuming ththe admins don't see). The dungeons would keep items of power out of the hands of greytide, and in the hands of those who work for and earn the loot.

We really do need a new away mission, now that I think about it.

More than ok with this; this will solve a lot of game balance issues as well.

Let's brain storm, where would it go? Personally I would like to see it have the option of multiple locations.

You asked about TELECRYSTALS, which are what the syndicate uses to buy items from the PDA, and like I said in game, it scales on server pop. What you wanted to ask about was BLUESPACE crystals, the junk you shove in the teleporter and steal crap with. There is the problem. Bluespace crystals can be made easily, provided you have a semi-competent crew.

Ya, I'm a massive dumb ass, I meant bluespace crystals.

    No need to make them.

You can get 5 crystals by taking apart the any one of the teleporters nobody uses.

Other than the captain's where are the others? Because his gets used enough to warrant security getting grouchy at me for taking it.

  12.

This has been covered already; 4 bluespace crystals and a fully upgraded telepad covers something like 95% of the station ; Telesci starts with 3 to limit their potential. If they'd like to expand their reach they'll have to create or steal 1 more bluespace crystal; likewise, they'll have to get R&D levels up to make better capacitors for the telepad. You can created more bluespace cyrstals at R&D.

Telesci is already borderline gamebreaking and is a horribly powergamey tool; it was deliberately nerfed for a reason.

See this is why I made this post, everyone told me it was not possible to get more crystals.

Teleporter station hubs have them and they can be made in R&D, for absolute certain---if they're not available in R&D, then that's a mes up and will be corrected as soon as we can get to it.

They are there, people are just wrong. Hopefully the swarm will leave so I can get some competant miners.

  15.

There needs to be an in game way to get more telecrystals.

Three is not enough, it may be ok for a casual telescience user, but an experienced one will need more.

If anyone takes the crystals telescience is fucked, and will not work.

I am kinda on the hype train for this. I was a big runescape fan back in the day and puzzles keep me going. I don't think people would mind if a complex solarium code piece was redacted from viewable open source. It would give players the chance to take a look at something quite large and test the metal of the most seasoned player. You could even put it over in science south of toxins. +1 for SPACE PUZZLER

    It would be so awesome!

  17.

    Open source+puzzles/secrets = solved the day after it's released--sadly.

this, sadly, I mean, is it possible to liscence part of the code differently, if it's written completely from scratch?

Probably, I guess we can just create parts of the code to be hidden from github, but it would defeat the purpose of open source

I don't think people would mind if it was that awesome

  18.

i have some goon experience so i COULD explain...here goes. i was playing my old character Leo Smith.

we decided to go on telesci adventures to visit all the fun locations...apparently most of those locations are related to the solarium in some way. you are supposed to collect items from each location. use items from one location to do indiana jones stuff in the other. if you are fast enough you MIGHT have enough specific items to do solarium stuff.

...if you do the solarium wrong the server gets a red filter and a static background topped of with a BDOS screen...then the next round starts...but something is wrong and radio is down and the ''centcomm investigation team'' need to survive and call the shuttle.

like typical goonstation. people keep secrets to themselves.

edit: when you get back the station has already gone to shit.

edit 2: get a original name other than solarium.

See I really like this, because A) people are dissuaded from spilling the beans because it could lead to shit being fucked up, and because even if they know how to do it, it's really hard.

We were actually shown by a goon admin a way to keep things secret in our code even being opened source, but that open it's own can of worms about "open source" and having things open to the public from a coders standpoint.

Is it possible for the admins to see things that are attempting to hide?

I have voted in favor of Para-Lore, but only because there was not a third option to augment the existing Bay-Lore.

Bay has a ton of awesome, well-written lore, and it would be a shame to throw it all away. However, few if any people will disagree that this lore was written for a very different play-style.

I think a lot of the background lore is quite impressive and should be kept, while certain areas clearly need more work or changing to better fit our style. While few if any people RP the races according to the wiki, having suggested RP guidelines is still a good idea. It gives players a basis to start with for new characters/races until they have their own to use instead. They are not full-on cookie cutters that should be adhered to without deviation, but rather a generalized view and suggestions. Some areas need more info though, such as IC knowledge regarding antagonists, since this is an area where Bay's lore doesn't match up with ours.

Lore is very much like Atmosia: a default set-up is there for the newbies, the veterans make their own versions, and everyone stays in the game as long as there is something there.

EDIT: Thanks, re-voted for the new Augment option

This is why the Tajaran article is my favorite. It has pretty detailed and well written history of the people as a backstory, but there are subcultures allowing people to pick and choose how their character is. I think we should have more subculture examples and also some clause about numerous other vague subcultures allowing players to make their own
