    Drug Testing

What if the brig physician, IAA, medbay and HoP had a machine resembling the virus scanner in virology (insert a blood-filled syringe, readout shows any active pathogens in the blood) where you can find out a list of certain illegal/all drugs that have been administered during the shift, whether or not they have fully metabolized (currently, you can only see any active chems in the blood). That way, you can check to see if someone engaged in illegal drug use, or confirm the toxin someone was poisoned with even if it fully metabolized. Issue IAA's a box of syringes and the right to engage in "random drug screening" regardless of alert level, and add a line to SoP allowing heads to authorize demotion at their discretion based on having engaged in illegal drug use (however brigging can not occur unless someone has possession of drugs or active illegal chemicals found in their system).

Add a new chem that wipes all previous drug use from being found by these new machines, but make it difficult to create/exclusive to botany and have it have crazy side effects (hallucinations, hunger, blackouts, etc.).

    Mandatory Minimums

This rare random event would say that CC has noticed that illegal drug lords have gained access to a nearby teleporter and are beaming drugs aboard the station attempting to cause chaos. CC has issued a zero tolerance policy on illegal drugs and that new punishments for illegal drug creation/distribution/possession have been printed out at all security terminals. (30 mins for possession, perma for distribution, execution for creation) At the same time, have crates of illegal drugs teleported in to the station at random locations all can access (perhaps the old bar always gets a crate and two others spawn in separate, randomly determined other areas of maintenance/station). Only a magistrate would be empowered to circumvent these new laws. Chaos !!FUN!! would ensue.

If nothing else, empowering the IAA with random drug screening would be the most fun out of all this, and would give them something to do when there's no complaints.

I like the modification regarding job preferences. If that's too difficult to code, perhaps add an extra tier or two (Very High, Very Low). This might make the coding slightly easier and not nix everyone's curated job preferences in the event the suggestion is added.

IIRC, drones and engi borgs get a large, yet limited, amount of metal between charges. Something like 50 sheets or so. These materials are restored gradually while in the charger (and sometimes you have to wait longer than a max charge for the materials to fully restore), so I am not sure if "infinite tables and racks" is actually possible.

Regarding the mother lawset: I think the only thing that might need a modification to the Mother lawset is to ensure that the laws actually get stated by the AI, because interpretation can be left open for a particularly dickish AI to not state their laws because "Simon didn't say" ("Mother").

Bonus: create a "Father" figure in the Mother lawset for the Captain (or for extra !!FUN!!, a major role that is NOT the Captain: NT Rep, Magistrate, CentComm, etc.). Basically a onehuman override clause of the Mother lawset so if "Mother" said no, the "Father" can say yes and force the AI to comply with the "child's" request.

For gits who think greentext is the most important factor in this game. Get out it isn't, fun is.

Sure, if you take a purely gameplay min-maxing, play-to-win focus, it's a stupid objective, but if you are taking things that way, you shouldn't be playing SS13.

Making the objectives MORE fun is the point of this suggestion, at least to me it is. Asking someone to remove themselves from the round for that "precious" greentext is typically NOT fun. And that greentext is usually gotten in one of two ways: committing suduko or in a greytiding bloodbath that ends others' rounds as well. We don't want to give such open-ended objectives that might encourage the latter, and neither of those truly create much fun.

Can't we be creative enough to make it fun whilst staying alive? Keeping the objective for the 5% of the people who will truly RP it is silly to me.

  4.

I think it should be removed. It's not a "Die a Glorious Death" objective. It's a "Die a death" objective.

I could understand if this objective was saved for times admins were online and observing and they could check the greentext box themselves, traitors with the objective being asked to ahelp before going on their death jihad. But that is too little RP bonus for too much admin intervention, so that will never happen.

NTSAM's notion of it being a "take a break" objective is valid, though, and it certainly reframes the objective from being a "useless" one to being an "pretty annoying" one. Not being fully redeemed to me, I think that, without an RP foundation, Die a Glorious Death should be nixed.

  5.

So I started this during a quiet part of my last shift seeking to document the problems with the updates to the supply ordering console, the supply shuttle, and other adjustments. I figured it would eventually get here but figured I'd send an IC fax to the admins online at the time should I be able to get one of the heads to actually send it. I never was able to finish, a blob came aboard and I had to drop writing it. Instead of revising it for an OOC forum, I figured I'd finish the fax IC and put it here for your enjoyment and edification.

tl;dr: Give me back my old supply ordering console and please, for the love of god, fix the supply shuttle!

RE: Feedback regarding upgrades recently installed on NSS Cyberiad

    Dear New Products Team,

As a member of the Supply Division, I often find myself forgotten as other teams and projects get people and resources from superiors and Central Command. That is why it brightened my day to learn that our team here on the NSS Cyberiad received upgrades to many of our standard-issue electronics and mining equipment. I encourage Central Command to continue refining the elements of the supply infrastructure throughout Nanotrasen, and am honored that the Cyberiad was chosen as a trial market for these upgrades.

I must admit, however, that many of the planned upgrades have added unintentional problems that did not exist prior to the upgrades. I will attempt to outline the pros and cons to this slate of upgrades as I have noticed during my current shift, in following:

    - Upgrades to mining satchels and cargo box allowing bluespace crystals is an incredible bonus to miners with limited carrying capacity. Great work on these upgrades. If it is at all possible to have the ore redemption machine actually pick up the crystals upon dumping the crate, that would save a bit of time. I noticed my miner left his crystals having forgotten they were among the load of ore that was being processed.

    - The new software for supply ordering is cumbersome and is an overall efficiency loss for users. Here are my thoughts on the new UI:

    1. The only pro to this new system is the messaging from Central Command confirming supply point gains from crates and stamped manifests. It seems that manifests may have to be sent on the returning shuttle from the order they were received to get any credit, however. I sent a number of manifests received before I reported as quartermaster this shift upon the shuttle docked when I arrived and only received credit for one manifest. This is problematic and if a fix could be applied it would be helpful.

    2. You cannot order multiples of the same crate. This is HIGHLY problematic. During my shift, a level 5 biohazard came aboard this station and I had to order 7 laser crates one at a time, scrolling through 4 screens apiece to do so. 28 screens versus 2 makes this adjustment highly unfavorable and perhaps could cost lives in an emergency.

    3. Pending requests for approval do not display on the screen as they once did, meaning if an order is placed when a cargo technician is not around, and the paperwork is shoved aside or misplaced, that order could be forgotten until the next order is approved.

    4. Crate contents are not available on this UI that I can see. Central Command docked a supply point bonus due to an incorrect count of a received crate. If we are unaware of the contents of a crate, how are we to confirm accuracy in this regard?

-The new shuttle system. The updated shuttle, issued to mining and the cargo bay, have two new features, neither desireable to cargo. The first is that they are now sent cold, airless, and depressurized. I had to request access to EVA to ensure I didn’t die unloading the supply shuttle. The second is that the airlock adjustments, made stationwide, have a particular problem with the supply shuttle – it breaks the use of the conveyor belts, making unloading an ordeal it should not be. Please make fixes to these adjustments whenever possible.

That is the extent of my observations this shift. I appreciate the fact that Nanotrasen seeks continuous improvement in our supply chain management systems. I hope Central Command continues to refine these upgrades to ensure they meet new efficiency levels than past systems.

    Sincerely,

Complaint: Handling of complaint against player "Lily Whitewater." Lily was not an antagonist during the round, (It was a changeling round). During the round, the HoP had made a spare ID for use in ID computer. Mid-round, Lily broke into the HoP's office, stole the spare ID and/or gave herself additional access. Soon thereafter, Lily accessed a comms console and requested the nuclear authentication codes. After a search, she was located. I was the Captain that round and, after consulting my heads regarding space law, determined that she should be executed for the crime (I have only ordered executions twice as Captain, I usually perma, and this decision troubled me because no physical harm had yet been done - but since there was a changeling threat and the grand theft as well as the threat to destroy the station, I had to assume she was an antagonist and as a possible changeling execution was the best option I saw - I may be wrong but that's my mindset). So, Lily was executed. Without my consultation, I understand that she was cremated.

Later in the round, a third AI was activated with the name of L.I.L.Y. Very shortly thereafter, the nuke codes were again requested, this time by L.I.L.Y. This was when I shot off my first player complaint. In case there is any doubt, I believe it was determined that Lily Whitewater and L.I.L.Y. were the same player. Her laws absolutely did not allow this. She expressed over comms that she requested the nuke codes as the AI to "teach us a lesson about leaving an ID in the HoP's console." She was carded by the creating roboticist and survived the rest of the round. After determining that she wasn't an antag, I shot off another player complaint with the clarification.

I've seen Lily Whitewater often on the servers, I believe as a blueshield in addition to command roles. She knows better. This violation of the rules detracted from a round where our sec staff started out so light we had to call an ERT for changelings because we literally had an empty security staff for that 5 minute period or so when we sent the request. Her violation of AI laws is especially egregious.

After the round was over, Qinetix communicated with me. I'll show the transcript of our entire conversation, beginning with my first player complaint:

(Me) Player Complaint: Lily Whitewater - now L.I.L.Y. called for nuke codes twice, once as a borg. If her laws don't somehow allow it, that's a severe violation of the rules. She should know better too, I've seen her in important roles if I remember correctly.

    (Round ends)

L.I.L.Y. (Played by: Dreadweaver)'s laws at the end of the game were:

    1. You are expensive to replace.

    2. The station and its equipment is expensive to replace.

    3. The crew is expensive to replace.

    4. Minimize expenses.

(Me) Player Complaint: Confirming Lily Whitewater wasn't a traitor at all. Requested nuke codes "to teach a lesson about leaving an ID in the machine" and then violated borg rules and requested them again also to "teach a lesson". Went beyond nuisance.

Moderator Qinetix: I already handled it.

Moderator Qinetix: Also if they were really mean, they could've just used your access, that would be indeed chaotic.

Moderator Qinetix: Or whoever left it open

Me: That isn't an excuse and is a bad justification. Besides, the violation of AI laws is where she went totally out the window with the rules.

Moderator Qinetix: As I said, it's been handled.

Me: Ok. That additional snub wasn't warranted. Thank you.

    Attention

All hands, captain Lily Whitewater on deck!

    OOC (Me): what the hell

(yeah, I should have kept it to adminhelp, but I have to admit this was like a slap in the face)

Me (adminhelp): Question: She wasn't even BANNED? That's ridiculous.

Moderator Qinetix: Alex, Handled doesn't imply someone was banned.

    Moderator Qinetix: They've been warned.

Me: I disagree and will take this to the forums. Kid gloves.

    Moderator Qinetix: Okey dokey.

Me: Are you the one who handled it, then?

Moderator Qinetix: I've warned them. Yes.

Moderator Qinetix: I will however not be able to see your player complaint. That's for the admins to deal with

(that last part I don't understand since he directly responded to my player complaint)

So, to recap, Lily Whitewater self-antagged, respawned as AI, broke AI laws, distracted the whole of security twice, and violated rules of roleplay, function and the server. She is a player who knows better, as command and I am pretty sure blueshield. To top it all off, Qinetix throws a dart at me (or whoever does it - and I do try to log out) for leaving an unlocked comms console, seemingly equivocating an unlocked console with self-antagging and violation of AI laws.

And then Lily gets captaincy the next round, with not even a temporary ban.

I am highly disappointed with how this situation was handled and Qinetix implying that command's ignorance of best practices (logging out of a console... or maybe leaving an ID in the ID computer...) is a justification or mitigation of self-antagging. Honestly, I think the harsher punishments should come down on those who the admins know for a fact know better, and Dreadweaver/Lily Whitewater does.

[Cross-posting the relevant info regarding Dreadweaver/Lily Whitewater to player complaints so this situation can get a second look by other admins.]

Why not just make them flop when they *flip?

Actually, I had thought of exactly this myself. And it doesn't even need to be the shoes. The clumsy gene. It could happen barefoot. I endorse this. I would say though that this would be funnier if there was only a chance of flopping.

  8. While the reasoning holds merit (clumsy gene, clown shoes are big and seem easy to trip on), I guarantee the change would be reverted if it is ever made. What happens when there's nuke ops or xenos or ANYTHING that a clown needs to run from, they fall and easily get robusted. Imagine if a clown was being ridiculously robust against nuke ops, then, right as they are about to demolish the last of them, with all the ghosts watching with anticipation and smiles on their faces, and suddenly trips on something giving the nuke op the opportunity to get away/detonate the nuke. The server would explode with rage at whoever recoded the shoes. It makes sense for fun and games, not at all fun for when push comes to shove.

Name: Jonah Bright (he's nominated for something else I see which is pure coincidence as I have been planning to do this for a couple of days now)

    Commendation: Cryostar

Reason: Asserted himself to ensure and personally performed a brain transplant from the burned husk of the captain (me) that other personnel (other docs, sec, others) gave up on and were about to morgue. Led to the identification of one changeling who was promptly executed and another changeling was largely stopped, also.

Actions leading to Commendation: Spoke up. Brain transplanted the Captain. Acquired body from genetics. Stopped doctors from dragging Captain to morgue.

    Recommending Person: Jack Edwardson

I, Jack Edwardson, do solemnly swear the above account is true, made in good faith, and understand that lying upon this commendation is grounds for immediate dismissal from NT and further penalties may apply.

  10.

I saw this because Tully bumped it. And I have no pony in this race besides a philosophy degree that has only been good for getting me in trouble like this.

That said. The objective is badly worded.

"Hijack the emergency shuttle SO no loyalist nanotrasen crew can escape."

A strict reading of the objective leaves several unanswered questions. Strictly worded, it does NOT provide any requirement that the traitor:

    a. Be on the shuttle at all (though some element of control over the shuttle would be required and I can't think of any offhand that could be done without any traitor setting foot on the shuttle. Perhaps erecting a huge shield around escape, but since the shuttle will launch on autopilot, that's questionable.)

    b. Escape the station.

    and/or

    c. Survive until the end of the round.

And why "so"? "...SO no loyalist nanotrasen crew can escape." What if the whole crew piles into one escape pod? They escaped, just not on the shuttle. Traitor still gets greentext. Don't get me wrong, it's a damn accomplishment when no one from the crew makes it on the shuttle during a traitor round. I would curse myself if I got that objective. But the "so" instead of a clear objective or at least an "and."

So, my horse in the race I guess is clarification. There's too much back and forth about what's acceptable and what isn't with this minor case. So here's my suggestion:

Adjust the objective to the following format:

"Ensure no loyalist Nanotrasen crew escape alive on the emergency shuttle..."

    a. "...and escape alive on the emergency shuttle."

    b. "...and escape alive on the emergency shuttle or an escape pod."

    c. "...by any means necessary."

That would solve this issue. And, about this particular case, I think the solution was innovative but too meta in terms of planning with cloning already in mind. But I personally think this is an opportunity to learn and not to criticize.

  11.

    Here's my hijack topic:

A BUNCH OF TOTALLY UNRELATED TOPICS! GO!

If you decide not to use that topic, you must instead attempt to continuously talk about the pros and cons of General McClellan as a commanding officer of the Army of the Potomac in the American Civil War.

  12.

I REALLY like Keroman's idea of instructors, and for a small karma unlock price. That with job-training holodeck programs would make Paradise unique among the servers, and I think would discourage a lot of greytiding/self-antagging from idle hands.

    A few ideas:

    - Perhaps creative wardens could agree on a set period of instruction time in a skill in lieu of imprisonment for non-violent offenses that would otherwise merit 10+ minutes of brig time. A certificate of completion could be required. Perhaps a karma-unlock job much like brig physician could be made specifically for an in-house "Corrective Education Director" whose purpose is to coordinate instruction as alternative sentences, either instructing personally or by using the pool of active instructors.

    - Some ideas on karma unlock prices for instructors:

-Security Officer: No karma price: Admins manage who get these. Must be fluent in SoP, Space Law and have experience in all sec roles.

    -Bartender, Paramedic, Scientist: 3 Karma

-Chemist, Roboticist, Medical Doctor: 5 Karma

-Surgeon: 5 Karma plus MD certification

    -Engineering, Mechanic: 5 Karma

-Atmos: 10 Karma and/or admin nod

    -Toxins: 10 Karma

-The practice range for security can be ported to the holodeck and that space used as a second interro room. Splitting up pairs can be valuable. Prisoner's dilemma, anyone?

    And last but not least...

-Certificates of completion can be put on someone's personal description, with the names of their instructors. How can you cross-check that? The library. Take the certificates of completion, using IC signatures that can be matched, get them stamped by the Captain or HoP at the time, then bind them all together in the library and added to the database. That way, they can be accessed and verified in other rounds. EDIT: Or, add a special "CentComm" stamp that can be spawned only by an admin to stamp the certificates.

  13.

I wholeheartedly approve the merits of this. Never played xenobio so I don't know much, but I do remember something peculiar when I was a miner once that may help. This was in the last month.

I was exploring the mining asteroid and entered an airlock of an off-site station to find mining equipment. Only it wasn't mining equipment entirely. The object whose sprite looked identical to the ore bag was called a "sample bag" or the like. Since it sits with a pickaxe, shovel and other trademark mining supplies, I found it odd when I examined the stack once and saw it come up as "sample bag" or "sample pouch." Not sure if it holds extracts. The place I'm thinking of, from the miner's perspective, is the safe side (east side) of the asteroid, all the way north when you follow the piping until you reach an airlock. There are also some sort of xenobio picks or something too, in a small box. I asked about it when I found it, someone said that feature was broken at the time.

  14.

What about expanding unlockables from vending machines based on coin type? This may simply be another suggestion entirely but in the vein of greater commerce, perhaps make certain current items (or certain new items) unlockable only by certain coin type. Tha would dramatically increase departmental dependence on mining, with everyone - medbay, the barkeep, the chef, security (optional here, make some gear free but certain items like seclites and real handcuffs require certain levels of coinage), engineering (youtools take coins), to just common civs require coinmaking and materials from mining... as if cargo needs more fighting for their resources. And, maybe get the special coins that miners can find unlock really great stuff in each vending machine.

If that were to happen, make the coin on a wire a little less OP.

  15.

Backstory: The Cyberiad has encountered a strange anomaly that has created a massive powersink in the station, localized in the holodeck. The lazer tag simulator that was running has had the entire station's power run into it. In the resulting power surge, the holodeck landscape expanded over the entire footprint of the station, creating a holocopy of everything and everyone. The safeties have been burned into the off position. The real station is crippled. Unpowered and dying, the station needs the power that is pouring into the holodeck. An engineering ERT is currently beng assembled at CentComm, but communication is spotty and no one has a clue where to start to fix this problem. But that isn't your or the most pressing concern. Massive energy spikes are pouring from the holodeck and wreaking havoc on the physical station. And the AI, who until now has been the only one able to enter the holodeck, has linked the spikes to the fact that whenever a holocrewmember or holographic object leaves the station, disappears entirely. The working theory is that the power is released in an uncontrolled manner whenever a hologram leaves the hologrid. While the program can be reset, the power is finite and is causing real destruction. Worse, while the holograms are remarkably well copied and act much like their real counterparts, every time the program is reset, some damage akin to clone damage occurs in the holograms. In fact, when the AI has attempted to comunicate with the holograms to stay calm and not to leave the station, incredulous cries of MALF AI! TRAITORS! LINGS! WIZARD! occur. And that's just the beginning. Crazed sec officers are seen brutally harrassing the crew. Imprisoning them for odd and wrong motivations, wild conspiracies, or worse still, sadistic pleasure. This is so foreign to what you know at Nanotrasen. And the holographic deaths caused by the rampant hysteria also causes wild energy spikes from the holodeck on the real Cyberiad. Something must be done. The AI, running on limited power, has calculated that only one more reset of the program be attempted, and has found a way to insert a single real crewmember into the program, however, radiation damage will occur over time. No one not expendable should be sent, of course. You can receive medical attention in the holographic medbay, but will they dissect you as some foreign abomination, especially when they discover that a copy of you exists?

You are the station's psychologist. Rarely needed in a new age of medical advancement and competence in all areas and job functions, you have reduced your life to a sad existence of drinking at your uselessness. And yet, your lost art is the one needed most now. You have been ordered to enter the holoprogram on its last reset. The station's AI will be ported into your PDA, and will be able to open doors but not much else.

The Chief Engineer has suggested that while the energy spikes are both unpredictable and uncontrollable, a controlled energy spike would be able to be fed back into the station's batteries, allowing the singularity to be reset and the energy output then controlled. The alternative is that the singularity will grow to the point where it will destroy the station. Your mission: You must prevent, at any cost, any of the moving parts of the station (namely, the holographic copies of the Cyberiad crew) from leaving the station proper (including other z-levels), to prevent any call of the emergency shuttle, and ultimately, to assemble on the holodeck at 14:00 hours precisely, at least 30 holocharacters when a controlled shutdown will occur. The AI won't be able to help much. He will be ported into a pAI on you capable of opening doors and providing moral support. Do not, at any costs, allow the pAI to be captured, destroyed, or subverted. Perhaps you could get the AI transfered into a more useful, mobile version. Only a robotics department counterpart could help with that. You can also receive medical attention in the holographic medbay, but will they dissect you as some foreign abomination, especially when they discover that a copy of you exists? Oh, did I forget to remind you of that? And this crazed station has a fitting, malfunctioning AI to match it.

It's time to save your crewmates. It's time to put your lessons to work. You are the unlikely hero.

YOU ARE THE LONE VOICE OF REASON.

    ---

    Objective ideas for others...

A copy of the psychologist has the objective to kill the real one.

    AI has malf objectives.

Certain crewmembers have "There can only be one" or "Escape alone-hijack"

Incredibly destructive events. Anything that would normally force a shuttle call. The greentext goal is to get the station to 14:00 and crew to a specifc section, holodeck or cargo bay, maybe two alternate locations.

What do you think? Is it feasible? Of course the real Cyberiad wouldn't be seen. It would be a normal shift with a psychologist or psychology team with the greentext objectives as stated above. As an alternative to asembling in a location perhaps get to 14:15 without boarding the shuttle. Anyone, including psychologist, travelling to a different z-level or EVA means instant death (or perhaps infection with incurable virus thatwill result in death in 10 minutes or so to prevent meta realization of the connection).

  16.

One of the things I dread is playing a job for the first time where few, if any, others are alloted and others can't or won't assist you in doing your job. Access restrictions, demand of crisis situations that require your attention or everyone else's, etc. Engineering and medbay are two good examples of this.

I am reluctant to become an engineer. There's so much I don't know and for what I do know, I usually need to keep a wiki open right next to me for the steps I forget. So, I spend a lot of time scavenging the maintenance tunnels as a civ, scavenging for an hour to find a coin that will allow me to buy the lone pair of insulated gloves in the youtool that is inevitably gone when I insert it at 13:30. Also, cargo sends me around the station getting forms in triplicate for a pair of

ultra-contraband criminal gloves needed for breaking in to everything

insulated gloves. Cargo sends me to the HoP who sends me to the CE, then the CE ignores me. Then it's off to the caverns to find enough materials to actually create anything. Random sec officer searches you and asks WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Just trying to learn, friend. PERMA for the criminal scum!

There must be a better way.

To my suggestion: put all the materials and tools (perhaps a couple of youtools on steroids) and a working airlock and APC in a holoprogram. Break things down, build them back. Create amazing devices and learn how to be robust when meteors start bombarding the station. Try to walk out with anything, it disappears. End the program and start again. Hold demonstrations where an engie teaches others how to do things. Maybe add a button which will create a breach in all except atmos effects that needs to be fixed. No job demands and CE's wondering why you signed on if you were useless, no denied cargo requests, no hassle in acquiring materials, no learning from a jail cell.

If something like this is feasible (and it may be really not, so I apologize to any coders I've frazzled), maybe this can be expanded for other jobs. Chemist and chef are two jobs with a lot of demand from the station, rarely a partner that isn't SSD, and specific access restrictions that prevent others from coming in and/or using your equipment. Perhaps a holomedbay with cryo, surgery theater, etc. If you can't summon up holopatients, just put a crowbar and a knife in there to inflict the injuries that can then be holohealed.

I don't want to make this overwhelming, and even one very small and simple holodeck training to test the idea out would be fun too. Thoughts on interest and feasibility? Thanks to the coders for everything you do already.
