  2. Title. In my great wisdom as HoP i ordered ablative armor vests for style for myself and Ian, and confirmed my suspicion nobody had ever had this brilliant idea before, and nobody had actually sprited it for Ian.

I don't know how big of a job it would be, but you can put the actual vest on Ian in the collar slot already, there just isn't a sprite for it to actually display.

Only issue here is the obvious balancing issue that comes with Ian potentially being more resistant to energy weapons, considering how much of a murder monster he already is.

    Let's make it happen-

Indeed its easier said then done but you at least have to try reminds me of when i had to deal with a blob and terror spiders as a ERT commander once..let me tell you it did end with CC choosing plan B

The ERT seems to constantly be a weak and dysfunctional team. There are in my opinion many reasons to this, but a large one is that people think the ERT hardsuit makes them a human tank which cannot die, which leads to them not even think needing to work as a team to stop the bad guys. In other words the mission is doomed before they even arrive on the station, because the attitude they go in with is a wrong one. I have seen many ERT commanders try and command in an effective way, only to be ignored completely. Another factor I can think of is perhaps the ERT radio key being :$, which is not convenient in the slightest. In the end the ERT follows all the same principles as the sec team, and people need to have the right attitude towards teamwork for there to be a chance in the first place.

Your story and insights show me you'll grow into an outstanding Head of Security.

Keep up the good work and remember that a good HoS isn't necessarily one that robusts all the antags, its one who can keep the Security Team from being Shitcurity and does his best to uphold Space Law fairly.

This is exactly my opinion as well. The skill of being able to follow the continuous flow of information and being able to steer through it is what I think is one of the most important skills for a Head of Security. As a member of the sec team I find it quite annoying if the HoS is quiet and not available for most of the round. It takes active effort all the time to be available for the team, and it’s very exhausting. Despite that, I think it is one’s duty to give their everything as the HoS, as it can and will define the round for many people.

The core moral behind me as a security player is that I am here to have fun and make sure others get to have fun too. That particular round I jailed the mime for 25 minutes, which I felt at the time was justified. However, the player immediately went SSD. This cut very deep and I felt like I had failed. I had made someone likely feel so bad they did not wish to play any more. Granted I don’t know what they felt for sure, but quitting the game is a pretty solid signal they weren’t very happy. I want to try and avoid causing that in the future as best as I can.

and organized sec team is a good sec team

I have found this is a lot easier said than done.

  5. I have been trying very had to think a moment “worthy” of posting here, and most things feel too small and boring to be worthy of a post. Anyway here’s a story from today.

    What went down:

So I finally did in my time playing warden and security officer to muster the courage to put myself to the test as the HoS. I was in luck and it turned out a round of extended, not a bad round for the first real HoS round. It was an interesting one. Starts off with none other than the mime barging into the brig, with access, and just calmly finding their way to a sec closet and arming themselves. Turns out the captain gave the mime nearly all access. Great. Brigged the mime for stealing (wasn’t actually sec) and possessing a restricted weapon. Mime went SSD. Maybe I was a bit harsh on the conviction, but they knew what they were doing, so they had it coming. Magistrate started to impeach the captain. Cap went cryo, mime access was normalized. Sweet victory. I found that ordeal a lot more infuriating than I should, it felt like a personal insult that the captain would just give the mime armory access like that. Maybe I take this game too seriously.

I haven’t played many extended games, but I was totally surprised by the amount of small chaos people constantly bring about. I had to fire an officer for beating a scientist into crit for “resisting”. God knows what they were resisting. People were abusing each other, dragging each other into maints in gas masks for fun, which kept us busy. There were giant spiders running about, people stuffed in a body bag found in the HoP’s office. All kinds of random stuff. I was busy for the entire round with the only breather being the time I boldly went afk to take a piss.

    What I learned:

    Playing HoS is hard. Very hard. I had a semi competent sec team, with especially the warden and the magistrate being great credits. Even though there were no syndicate agents running around murdering officers, I still struggled to keep my officers from running into maints alone. Coordinating the security team is very difficult, and even though I tried to be constantly active in everything that was going on, I still couldn’t keep it all in my hands. There is simply too much information to process and too little time to be everywhere you need to be. The lesson here for me is something I think I had quite a good grasp of after playing so much warden and sec officer;

The HoS role appears to serve the security team best when you stay back as a manager, a head. It’s in the name. I must be a pillar for the team to rely on, to fall back on to make calls and give advice when needed. I must communicate the current status to the security team constantly, and keep other command up to date on the sec’s status constantly. I must know the SOP and space law better than anyone else, and correct the team when they make mistakes. A quiet HoS running after bad guys is “leading” a losing team. Of course I have to get out there and fight every now and then, but I must not and I cannot respond to every singe thing that comes up. I must instead order the officers to respond to the threat as a team. Making sure nobody is going alone, and everything is being prioritized the right way. Now all this is obviously impossible without a team that first of all has members in it, and secondly is paying attention to the chat and to me. If there is no warden, my time is hijacked into doing his job. If there are not enough officers, my time is hijacked into running around doing basic officer duty. In both those cases the security team cannot be led effectively, in big part due to the mechanical limitation of not being able to robust and type at the same time.

In the end I spent most of the round mostly around the brig, keeping up to date with the status of the station and the team, and moving information around. I was able to have the warden and the magistrate do most of the processing, which led to what was in my opinion great officer coordination around the station. In the end I spent very little time on the field myself. Of course on more hectic rounds I’d have to get my hands dirty more, but I feel like this is the ideal scenario. I was active on all comms channels, and managed to keep the strings in my hands despite everyone’s best efforts to the contrary.

I will play HoS again, but I still feel very green in the role and I feel like I have so much yet to learn. I did get 3-4 karma after the round, which admittedly felt very good after all the effort. I love you all.

This is going above and beyond for a typical security main, however don't feel too bad that you got killed by the vampires, because the taser is very hit-or-miss, mostly because of the instant stun and long buffer time between shots. Lots of times there are incidents where security is super competent because they manage to hit all their taser shots, and others where they could be doing everything correctly and be a dream team but not land a single shot. And anyways, if they were vampires like you said, they could rejuvenate from the stun with no blood cost and only a cooldown, so if you hit it chances are the outcome would be the same.

Thank you for the reply, you bring out excellent points and I immediately see areas of improvement for myself here. Big one being knowing the antagonist’s abilities and what they are resistant to and being able to pick the right weapon. I also appreciate your point about the fact that a big contributor to security’s effectiveness is sheer mechanical skill, in many situations it eventually comes down to either literally hitting or missing. My thinking in my post above naturally was revolving around the other elements that go into good security.

As a new player (~100 hours) I find I still know so little about the game’s quite deep systems it taxes my confidence in playing security. I appreciate your supportive approach a lot. In this game you are very fast verbally punished by other players for not knowing everything and being as good as they would have been in your place. It takes active effort, at least for me, to fight that frustration and be supportive of new(er) players.

  7. This one happened last round; We had vampires and traitors, i was playing the warden.

Now these weren’t your typical vampires, these were a pair of organized and skilled vampires. They holed up in the atmos room in security maintenance and started competently obliterating the entire security force with hit and run attacks. Eventually they got brave enough, after obtaining a security guard’s ID, to attack the armory. There were around 4 officers, me and the head of security nearby when this happened. They charged in, stunning an officer standing in the equipment room, and barged into the armory. They quickly saw that they were outmatched and started to retreat. Seeing the situation, I, a moron, thought: “They are outmatched 2:1 against tasers, now is the time to attack” and I charged in. I missed my first and the most important shot, and got tased back in return. In a couple of seconds they had tased me and 2 other officers and were dragging me down the hall towards the maintenance, with only the Head of Security in pursuit. Naturally he got hit by a taser electrode not far from the maintenance door, and was unable to save me. They dragged me through a fake wall of some sort into the security maints atmos room. I quickly met my end there, as I was in an inescapable stun lock. Officers in hot pursuit didn’t notice this wall trick they were doing until they dragged another person in, but for some reason they just forgot about it and left us there to be massacres by the vampires. I really don’t know what went down after that point, so this is it.

The excuse: I thought I had a read on the situation, where I actually did not.

What I learned: The taser is an amazingly strong weapon. Especially when deployed from a defensive standpoint, where you get to focus on hitting that crucial shot against a closing enemy. Forcing my then strong defensive position into an offensive one was a grave mistake. Literally. Had I stood my ground and defended the armory, I would have likely been able to repel them both by myself. Chasing someone with an effective ranged stun weapon, even as a team, is likely to end very poorly, especially when the hostile is a skilled player.

What I feel like I should do in the future, is let the hostile retreat and hold my ground. Lose the battle to not lose the war, or something like that. When I am reacting to the actions of another player, who has the element of surprise, all the cards are stacked against me. They are in control. When they are doing hit and runs from the maintenance, I must hold my ground and think, instead of reacting blindly. Sure there are times when I should chase them into the maintenance, but in many cases, that is just the domain, where they are in control, and I am forced to react to their initiative.

I am beginning to feel that a big part of what leads into “shitcurity” is blind reacting to the actions of our adversaries in situations, where it makes little sense. I feel like this can be improved by being mindful of the fact, that you most likely do not need to chase them into the dark maint NOW, but you should instead regroup and create a plan, where they will not be  in control of the situation and will be forced to react to YOU. The security team has a huge advantage against any antagonist; an actual team that can execute a coordinated and controlled response against an often solo player. As long as the solo antagonist keeps the team from grouping up and making a plan, they have a fighting chance.

Please feel free to comment on my thoughts here and point out any likely holes in my thinking.

    TL;DR: I was shitcurity.

  8. I’ll start with the one that comes first to mind. Happened last week.

It was the first ever round as the CE for me, I had just barely gotten together the hours in engineering to qualify, and decided to just go for it. Unluckily I was the only person in the whole team at the start, and I had never set up the engine before.

Naturally I, an intellectual, opened the setting up the tesla page on the wiki, confident I could do it. It went fine until the point I had to start the PA and get the engine going. I turned on the PA and the tesla wasn’t appearing, something was amiss. I hadn’t summoned the actual engine in with the thing on CE’s desk, but I did not know this. So I turned off the containment and asked for help from a helpful NT rep. They swiftly pointed out my error. Then I, an intellectual, proceeded to go into the center of the containment, ready to wrench the thing into place when it arrives, and proceeded to gib myself by summoning the engine on top of myself.

The excuse: I thought I could do it.

What I learned: I learned to set up the tesla.

  9. I am going to post in this thread moments of my own development as an ss13 player. Think of this like a diary for the times I screw up and what I learned. If it gives somebody some shits and giggles, I’m winning.

The format will be roughly the following:

The thing I did: eg. “I beat a guy I saw having equipped an emag on the head with a toolbox”

The excuse: “I thought as an emag is s-grade contraband this gave me the right to robust them then and there”

What I learned: I learned there are stickers that make your ID look different. I also learned to read the space law and the sop more carefully.

I know all you guys are perfect anyway, so I’ll probably be the only one posting here, eh?
