  1. The only Zed i've heard of is the one from Pulp Fiction. That said, it's literally how the letter Z is pronounced in British English. It's also a pretty short and simple nickname, that's uncommon but not unheard of. I personally wouldn't feel like it's a well known enough character to warrant being disallowed.

That said, if his entire name was just "Zed", that should be disallowed for human characters, I believe one-word names are only allowed for specific races, like IPC's and a couple others.

The problem with your assessment is that there's multiple and conflicting definitions of "fun" and "interesting". For everyone person that likes and finds "fun" a long, drawn out, roleplayed cat and mouse with the detective and security......there's the person who finds that utterly and totally boring.

For every person who can't stand a traitor who does things very efficiently, there's someone who finds it extremely interesting, entertaining, and amusing.

We have both these players here at Paradise; to suggest that "only X is fun" or "Y is unfun" is to discount a player's subjective experience into playing SS13.

As i see it, this is exactly the reason why Paradise has such a conflicting range of RP and Non-RP players, the server has no focus. If you try to cater to every possible play-style, you only succeed in making a mediocre game experience for everyone.

As an aside....powergaming is quickly becoming a buzzword that I'm becoming rapidly uncomfortable hearing. Not because I don't think it exists (it does), but because it's being applied so liberally, the term is losing any teeth...likewise, it's often used as a way to downplay someone winning/losing. "Damn security officer; just powergaming; only reason he caught me". "Of course the traitor won, he was powergaming". While yes, I'm sure there are legitimate circumstances where this phrase is used and accurate---I see it used frequently when antags/sec come out on top in a scenario and the other party (or parties) involved or witnessing it are just angry that X won the engagement or came out on top (even if they weren't explicitly powergaming).

It's like the traitor who purchases a surplus crate in the middle of maintenance, then gets caught by a patrolling officer shortly thereafter and the traitor says "filthy powergamer" once he's eventually executed.

Not trying to say there's NOT powergaming...for sure, there is, but the phrase needs to be used accurately, and not applied to every action someone personally dislikes or finds frustrating.

I agree with you, but this is also why there probably needs to be a fixed definition of what kinds of power-gaming is unacceptable on the server, if any. It doesn't need to be an exhaustive list, but there needs to be a clear stance in the rules as to what specific kinds of power-gaming are disallowed, or which are officially allowed.

  3. Considering the potential dangers, and dangerous items, that can come back from the Gateway, I think there definitely needs to be more controls put in for how it works. If you think about it IC, why would you have that Gateway open all the time with nothing but a easily hackable door in the way? I imagine most people have seen Stargate either in film or tv, they have that shit in a vault deep under a mountain.

The concept of being a Gateway Explorer is cool, but unless there is either a LOT of potential away missions, or entirely randomised dynamic missions, there is little replay-ability. Even for newer players, by the time they get there, the entire place has probably been ransacked by the power-gamers.

As an alternative to just deleting the gateway, how about one of the following:

    • Disabling it at round-start, with only Command being able to reactivate it, likely needing approval from multiple heads.
    • Require ID access to even be able to go through the Gateway machine, and to return, if you lose your ID, you can never return unless rescued.
    • Same as above, but instead of requiring an ID to access, you need a special Implant or Suit that allows you to pass through without being turned inside out.
    • Could make it a Station Goal, to either build it from scratch, or restore the current Gateway room, with ordered parts.
    • Could be used as an Event only, have an Away team comprised of members of each department, with some mission they have to complete on the other side.

Oh boy, another thing i just remembered. Not knowing how to play a certain job and actively willing to learn it, and no one wants to teach me. Even after going through the wiki and relevent guides and being confused still... toxins... and getting nothing from anyone else in the department. Granted it being a calm round and people arent rushing. Im always willing to learn new things.

This, so much This. And then some Vox player comes along (why is it always a Vox?), asks why something is not done right yaya, then proceeds to take over without explaining what was wrong, and what to do instead.

This doesn't happen often, but it happened yesterday and it was enough.

Have massive head trauma from getting pummeled with the pointy end of a screwdriver. Doctor drags me to the OR and puts me in the scanner. Alright. So far so good. Then he strips me completely naked and tries to put an anesthetic tank on me. I tell him i dont want the tank and I want to keep my clothes on. He ignores me. I stand up and take the tank off and climb back onto the table. The doc yells "Fine! Die! See if I care!" And storms out of the OR. Still bleeding out of my eye sockets...naked and locked in the operating room.

Wait, what? Why were you refusing to cooperate on this? let the surgeon do what they need to do, sounds like he wasn't unreasonable to not deal with you, rude to just abandon you there though.

You don't normally get to make demands of the surgeon while they're trying to perform surgery, especially if it's an ER situation. If they need to cut your clothes off, you don't really get to refuse if you want to be treated.

Well I didn't find anything about what am I able to do if someone robbed me (not hurt/kill attempt so I even didn't categorized it as self-defence). Now I know that maximum I could do was a stun and a fist punch. But before, I couldn't make a proportion for that. I thought, like... what can I do against that... robbing him won't help and can't be done without disabling him. So it is even now unclear for me that "responding with disproportionate" stuff applies only for self-defence topic. Like... that's not defending myself. That's defending my items... idk.

The rule here doesn't apply to defending your items, only your life. So by that, you cannot use any damaging force against someone who has stolen items, you can only respond with proportional force in self-defence of your life. If someone has successfully stolen your items, what you should be doing is reporting it as theft to security. If someone is in the process of trying to take your items, you could try to disarm/trip or something to stop them, but you couldn't attack them.

  7. An interesting thing I noted in the say code recently, was that it looks like it already checks if you have the vocal_cords organ before it will let you speak, which works separately to the Mute genetic trait. Mutadone wouldn't cure not having working vocal cords, though surgery could.

Perhaps a solution would be to add the vocal_cords organ as an option you can set to be missing or replaced with a synthetic alternative at character setup, using the "Internal Organs" option that currently lets you set synthetic hearts and eyes. That way, the only code that needs to be added, is the option for character setup. Genetics/Mutadone works unchanged, and the already existing checks for vocal cords cover your disability.

  8. If you put someone in hospital with serious injuries because they slighted you somehow, you have broken the law and should be punished accordingly. That is disproportional use of force, if they use a high level of force against you, you can use a similar level of force to defend yourself, but if you react with excessive force, you are in the wrong.

Revenge is never a reasonable excuse.

Aright, I got the understanding that their won't be any jobbans. Now the only concern is just Station Goals in general which i'll leave keep the discussion here https://nanotrasen.se/forum/topic/11397-remove-station-goals/.

There is still the concern of the IC direction. Is the NSS Cyberiad really and feel like Science Station? The second question is, why do I feel like even though we claim to be MRP, we generally lean towards LRP?

To explain the second question a bit more. Based on personal accounts, I see just about more than half of every round I join are nothing more than a meme. I'm only viewing this during present time and I understand we are basically coming into the Holiday Seasons just about. I also understand that we are trying to make every round fun, but I believe that draws the LRP crowd in which some intend to stay and I'm hearing more and more claims that they don't come for the RP in general (mostly on discord). Once that happens you get a conflict of interest and it kinda messes with the balance with what we have, action and roleplay. Not "action or roleplay, it doesn't matter to us".

The server is LRP because the playerbase is LRP. As long as you aren't a dick and follow the rules, there is no actual requirement to RP much to play on Paradise, it's not enforced/encouraged by the admins nor the game mechanics.

Just look at the rules, Rule 2 is the only rule that really covers Roleplaying, and could pretty much be summed up as "no metagaming, IC in OOC, or silly names" as it doesn't enforce anything beyond those basic low RP concepts, and specifically says it doesn't enforce higher RP stuff such as expected level of knowledge for your role, Clone memory disorder, etc.

At the end of the day, the players that play on the server decide what kind of server it is, enforcing more RP mechanics through rules/admins/code would mean upsetting and potentially losing a lot of the current players.

As much as I love RP, I don't see being a LRP server as a bad thing, it's obviously what the players want, what the staff are happy with, and provides a fun experience for the many people that play here already.

I think Paradise should just embrace being LRP and just remove any references to MRP, because that's clearly inaccurate at this point.

  10. I've never seen anyone actually use the strange objects when I've been in science, most people seem to just churn out max tech levels by going through the same series of items that everyone does by rote. When you don't raise the tech levels to max within the first 10 minutes, someone (sometimes not even in the science department) comes along and shouts at you and takes over, because all that seems to matter is power-gaming max tech every round by the most efficient route possible.

If I go and mess with stuff in the E.X.P.E.R.I.MENTOR, none of it really contributes to tech levels, because someone else will have gone and maxed them in the small amount of time it takes to do so.

Also, I think I've seen a Scientist send back Tech disks with research maybe once ever since I've been playing here, and i started out playing Cargo a lot.

So no, I don't think the station can really be thought of a research station IC, because little research ever seems to happen, just going through the motions so that all the most powerful gear is available to take on the antags.

Most of the current station goals become essentially an extra burden for the engineering department to tackle in between repairing shit when the bombs start going off, and more often than not they just don't get built, because engineering has too much to repair already. There definitely needs to be more alternatives that take less time for engineering to set up, but then take more time for a mix of the other departments to really complete, more along the lines of the DNA vault, just quicker to set up initially.

The whole point of sign language (which I am currently learning) is to be able to speak to other speaking or deaf people, allowing you to communicate despite being nonverbal. If ONLY deaf people could speak sign language, there would be the same kind of prejudice there was back in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

My contribution: make sign language a ":0" language, can't use understand it while it's dark, and you have, to be able to use your hands to use it.

The PR I currently have submitted for this, works this way. Doesn't work if you can't see, have to have both hands free (and both functional), and obviously, people "see" it even if they can't hear. Though, can't sign when stunned and such, or restrained, stuff like that.

The only things i've got left to add to it, is changing the range drop-off, so from further away it acts more like whispering, you can make out they're trying to sign, but can't make out all of the words clearly. And maybe some sort of mixed up words if drunk, or clumsy, etc.

  12. One of the things I used to do wrong which slowed me down a lot, was making all the components of a mix in separate beakers, then mixing them together at the end. Was rather inefficient.

What I tend to do these days, is One-Bucket-Mixes. I put together a Google Doc and made a numbered list of what chemicals to dump into the bucket in what order, so it mixes as you go. You have to be careful what order you put things in, but one of the handy things of how chemicals mix in the game, is that any excess chemicals you make are leftover for use in other reactions, so you can sometimes put in all of one liquid that multiple reactions need in one go.

Well, I am the dead captain on the floor on the second picture. 10/10 would get nuked by Space Britain again.

I was the first Brit that got downed when we assaulted the bridge, pretty sure it was you that took my legs out. I had to be dragged around after that point, I ended up detonating my microbomb in the HoP's office as the rest of the team fell to Mechs.

I think this is being completely taken out of context here. This is about expecting players who play command roles which are relied on for the progression of the round to have at least the basic ability to speak. If someone wants to play a disabled snowflake then nobody is preventing that. It's just not acceptable in a role which requires communication skills and this is reflected in the real world.

Those players do already have the basic ability to communicate. The problem is how efficiently they can communicate, with the argument being made that if they can't communicate 100% as efficiently as someone without those disabilities, then they can't play those roles.

Whether a player chooses to communicate is a separate issue, and one that occurs regardless of disabilities set for the character.

Just on the record, when I'm an antagonist such as a shadowling, a vampire, or a cultist, some of my first targets include the mime and any mutes I am aware of at the time. You are clearly disadvantaged as you cannot even cry for help, and it makes you easy prey, especially if you're a loot pinata in terms of gear or access. (Such as an officer or a Head of Staff.)

It's not even meta or powergaming, plain and simple for predators relying on the maintaining of their cover you're far too easy to abduct/eat/murder.

I remember a time where a certain vulpkanin was playing Security as a mute, I was a vampire and I spent fifteen minutes stalking her from the shadows before I struck and dragged her into a lair I'd prepared on her patrol route. Free taser, sec access(I broke two other vampires out of perma with it later), access to sec comms, etc.

The same could be said of preying on newer players in those roles, if someone seems unsure/hesitant about what they should be doing, they're likely going to be easier prey.

What you've described is a far more interesting and clever way to antag, and should frankly be encouraged, so the antags don't always have to resort to brute force to achieve their goals. The more creative the antags, the more fun the round will be, at least in theory.

But I get it, that's the way the community here works, most antags are usually 100% powergaming, so therefore Command and Security have to do the same to be able to keep up, which means weaknesses must be disallowed.

Powergaming is the death of Roleplay.

  16. I'm also going to post in support of Jovan, I've played with him as the head of the department I was in, and he communicates more than most in those roles tend to do. There is no question in my mind, that there are many "disabilities", such as being mute, that can function perfectly well in command roles, albeit via more creative means than most can accept. You can create a strawman about armless security officers all you want, that doesn't mean all disabilities have the same impact on job performance.

I think this response, and the PR that was opened recently, are both missing the mark entirely. The solution here shouldn't be to just deny access to these roles to those characters, but instead, should be about discussing new mechanics that could be introduced to allow these characters an easier time fulfilling these roles. For example, how about adding a feature to the PDA so it can speak on it's users behalf, like a text-to-speech app? or Improving PDA messaging to multiple individuals or your entire department?

I'm sure if people start thinking about this problem from a different perspective, they can achieve the goal I think we all want here, that those in Command positions are able to fully communicate and perform their roles to their maximum ability.

I don't think Psychologist should be removed, it has potential to be fun, but at the moment, it rarely has the ability to be. It's always going to be a RP heavy role, but it could be afforded more opportunities to RP the role.

Psychologist probably shouldn't be based out of the Medbay, you'd rarely be interacting with injured patients most of the time, i'm of the opinion that Psychologist would be better suited being near to Security, and more a colleague to the Brig Physician. With the role's primary purpose to interact with the criminally insane, assess their danger to the station, and perhaps try to rehabilitate in some cases.

  18.

No matter what rule is put in place, it is always going to come down to some judgement calls.

Any silly character name based on popular characters/persons/memes/etc whether fictional or non-fictional is going to be jarring and ruins immersion.

I also think the naming conventions of each of the races should be cemented and encouraged/enforced, to keep those races consistent with their lore, Vox characters tend to be pretty good at this, some of the other races not so much. The Vulp wiki page (no idea if this is up-to-date) mentions that their names "sound harsh and guttural", but I can't recall a single instance of a character following that pattern, most opting for cutesy names of earth influence.
