  1. I believe the point of the suggestion is that most sec officers and the HoS DON'T do this stuff, leading to the warden having to do everything. This "middle man" job, as it were, would make people's lives easier during those situations. It would prove boring if you're in a round where sec officers and the HoS aren't shit, but you could also say that about jobs such as the IAA and Magistrate (which costs 30 karma, btw). Also consider that someone who was interested in the security role could jump into this job (or the brig physician, but BP requires medical knowledge, which not all people have) in order to get a bit more familiar with the brig and the processes without jumping immediately into security officer or Warden.

I feel like they should have a lot of stuff similar to the tajaran: Night/low light vision, claws, more vulnerable to heat, less vulnerable to cold (insulated). To be fair, more sensitive hearing sounds like something both Tajaran and Vulpkanin should have.

As far as vulpkanin specific things...They're dogs, so the ability to sense intent would be neat. Really, the most that could happen is someone metagames, but that's a player specific problem. RP wise, they could just growl more.

Honestly though I don't feel like they need to be super different...

  4.

Firstly, I'd just like to remind people that we are not bound to follow polls - especially ones that were posted in reddit such as this.

This is not a democracy. If there was a vote 99% in favour of allowing ERP, it wouldn't happen. '

Polls on the forum such as this are a very new thing. This server has been built on, and thrived on, the views and ideas of the founding members and the staff. Paradise has done very well in player count by following such without any community interaction. In the end, this was a server created to play SS13 the way we want to - and it just so happens a lot of other people also want to play that way. We aren't trying to get as many players as possible or anything here.

This is not to say community input is not very helpful and appreciated - we need to see the experiences of players, and to gauge how people are seeing things. We need feedback and we need ideas and suggestions.

This was done to judge community reaction - and it seems fairly even. To remove something like this we'd need overwhelming support. We've also done numerous votes on the server, and discussed it heavily among ourselves.

There is no overwhelming consensus to remove them - however adjusting the mechanics, lore, and a possible karma-lock seem all good ideas, which will be discussed over the upcoming weeks.

I'd like to thank the people who maintained civil tones throughout this. I don't know why this makes people behave in such rude fashions towards each other, but it seems to.

So, I just on a whim decided to mess around with SS13 some more and check out Paradise again (since it's about the only server I play on) and I run across this discussion about a new race being added. From my perspective? They're a dog race, to the tajaran's cat. What's wrong with this? Nothing.

Complaints about neon colored snowflakes? That can be applied to every race out there, not just the new one. Furries? Paradise has probably had furries long before tajaran/vulpkanin were around.

Anyways, what I really wanted to touch on was this:

There is no overwhelming consensus to remove them - however adjusting the mechanics, lore, and a possible karma-lock seem all good ideas, which will be discussed over the upcoming weeks.

If you're going to karma lock vulpkanin, you may as well karma lock every race except humans. My two cents, take it as you will.

  5.

When I first started out in Paradise, I got karma almost every single round just by playing a medical doctor. Nowadays that doesn't happen anymore, either because my skills have waned or other people make better doctors than me, I dunno.

I've found you're more likely to get karma if you're around consistently (so people know who you are), and roleplay well/are helpful to others.

  6.

Not very robust at all, unfortunately. I try and avoid combat as best I can, cause I just can't seem to get it down.

However, I'd say my best bit of robustness was my first time on the traitor role, as a medical doctor, with a kill objective. Now, you're probably thinking I did something doctor-like to kill my target, right? Nope. Grabbed a parapen (sleepypen? whatever) and continued about my day as usual. In the middle of some hijinx going on mid round, I found myself working alongside my target to escape the chaos. Only, when the chaos died down and we were about to go back to our business...Prick! Strangled him to death, then went back to work. Nobody ever suspected a thing.

  7.

    :laffo:

Also, the mechanic never got access to the armory. It was an example, like, the person didn't want to have to go to the armory every round to explore space.

Exactly this. I was complaining in the chat that I felt it unnecessary to have space conflicts that required armory weapons.

Okay. In that case, people are kinda jumpy when anything that might vaguely be related to the current round going on spills over into OOC chat. Someone just took that as IC in OOC and went crazy over it.

From the sound of it, you're not doing anything wrong. Don't worry too much about the differences between light/medium/heavy RP, cause metagaming is going to be metagaming regardless. Just remember that people don't like it when you talk about IC things in OOC channels, at all :P Unless it's post/pre-round.

  8.

Now people are getting defensive. All I did was answer the original question of what is medium RP, then go into detail about metagame knowledge. I used examples, sure, but I'm not pointing fingers at anyone. Unless, of course, some of you like trying to justify being a walking armory as IC? ;) (Now that's called pointing fingers)

The question still remains how a mechanic got access to the armory in the first place. If security let them in then all is fine.

  9.

Thank you for that clarification. I got into the argument with someone that it is meta to run and get armory level weapons before going into space (as recently dangers have been added to space).

They were very upset that I mentioned meta and said that medium Roleplay means meta is only if someone talks to another player in voice chat. I was then instructed to go to baystation if I wanted people to stay somewhat in character.

The thing is, the armory is restricted to red alert+ only. It's not there for "just in case". In cases like this, context really helps. Were you the Warden? If that's the case, your job is to stick to the Brig and hand out armory equipment to the officers if the station goes into red alert, not go off into space five minutes into the round cause you were bored. Were you the captain? Same deal.

Let me clarify: Medium RP doesn't mean there are times you can just completely neglect your character because you got bored. You play your character, with all the duties assigned to them.

It occurs to me you might not know what qualifies as metagaming. if you do, I apologize, I'm just going off of what your posts are saying.

Metagaming is using OOC knowledge for IC use. It doesn't matter if your light RP, medium RP or heavy RP; metagaming is metagaming. You, as the player, know that space has nasty stuff out there and that the armory has lots of good guns, so you put two and two together and decide to grab guns from the armory and go to space. Your character doesn't know that. Your character most likely doesn't have all encompassing knowledge of what's out there in space.

Again, context matters, but it was still metagamey to do that. If it was a xenomorph round and you decided to go off to space heavily armored "just in case"? Then yeah, extreme metagame going on there.

  10.

I've done a bunch of RPing in my time on various different games and most groups I've been in have hovered around this notion of medium RP.

From my experience, medium RP is close to what we have now: You play your character in your role, but you also have tools to chat with others OOCly (OOC channel, LOOC). Since it's medium RP, people don't freak out about OOC chatter as long as it's properly marked (OOC, LOOC). Metagaming is never a good thing, but I've never seen "OMG U SAID IC STUFF IN OOC BAN" outside of SS13. Not that this is a bad thing, but I find if people are really up for roleplaying, they'll be able to effectively ignore what's going on in the OOC channels and continue as their character would without needing admin intervention. For example...My character gets into a chat with another and they're acting shady (In the eyes of me, the player.). I know my character either wouldn't pick up on it or wouldn't think anything of it, so I continue RPing as normal despte that little voice in my head going "OMG THAT PERSON IS A TRAITOR/CHANGLING THEY'RE GONNA KILL YOU WTF".

I'll admit this here, admins do whatever they want: There are times I'll use the LOOC channel to let someone I'm RPing with know that no, I haven't forgotten them, I'm just having a derp moment trying to remember the proper order of things. I think stuff like that is perfectly fine to admit. Not everyone can be a super robust SS13 player, and I'd rather have another player thinking "Well, at least they're trying, but jeeze why did they have to go into LOOC for that?" rather than "wtf this person is an idiot wtf are they doing they should be banned from medical"

Compare that to heavy RP, which seems to focus around the idea of always in character all the time. No OOC or anything of the sort. You are your character, period. Or light RP which is basically yeah you're pretending to be a spaceman doctor, but have fun with it, whatever.

  11.

People "greytide" because they're bored and fucking around with other people is entertaining.

If you want greytide to be mitigated, give people something to do.

Alternatively; give the civilians their own little station to arrive and play on. With no EVA capability and completely separate from the main station.

Not always. There are two types of greyshirts from what I've seen. One type are the people who have played on the server for awhile and know the rules, who pick civilian because their favorite job is taken and they aren't comfortable with any other job/feel like joining as an (insert important job here) 30+ minutes into a round wouldn't make sense/they want to give the HoP something to do or play a gimmick job. These people don't run around vandalizing and burglarizing things for teh lolz.

The second type of greyshirts are the ones the thread seems to be talking about. Those people who think "oh well I'm just a civilian, I can do whatever I want", try to break into the captain's office, then scream and whine and moan ICly, OOCly, and to admins about ABUSE when security is doing their job. Or, my favorite (sarcasm), logging off the instant they get put in jail.

Anyways...An extra penalty to jail time would make sense, provided we change the server's lore around civilians to reflect it. "You have been given the privilege of coming on board the NCS Cyberiad in order to observe how a typical crew operates. You are expected to be on your best behavior during your stay, and as you are not a part of the crew rosters, you can and will be punished accordingly for any misconduct."

Here's the thing: No matter what you do (jail time, what have you) there will be people that abuse the system. You can't NOT act because you're afraid of what abuse people COULD do, since it's inevitable (especially since it's an online game). Instead, you act and try to find ways to counter any potential abuse.

Well, at the end of the day I'm of the opinion that those greyshirts that'll cry shitcurity and shit up the OOC channel and bug the admins constantly with BAN HE will continue to do so regardless of if civilians are given normal jail times or have a 10+ minute sentence added on for being civilians. However, I will say that the people who play civilians and aren't obnoxious twats won't have to worry about an extra jail time because they looked at an officer funny. In that situation, it's up to the security team at the time to know what is and isn't warranted.

  13.

I feel like those who pick civilian, either because their usual job has been taken already or they want to run a gimmick job, are fine, because eventually they get themselves a job and become a part of the station's crew. The people who choose civilian because "Well they're just assistant with a different name" or because they're not very confident with the way the different jobs handle so they don't want to mess anything up...That's a grey (heh, get it?) area IMO. The only group of people I agree with not having part of the crew are those who choose civilian and think it gives them free reign to screw around, hacking into areas and destroying stuff.

However, seeing as (to the best of my knowledge, just checked BYOND's SS13 listings) Paradise Station is no longer on the listings, there are times when the station doesn't have a HoP and the captain doesn't feel like giving people jobs, or the HoP is currently acting captain and doesn't feel like giving people jobs, etc. In that case, everyone's screwed.

TL;DR: I think civilians not being crew is fine. Those who want to become crew will eventually do so, while those who want to screw around and mess everything up will get harassed by the clown/thrown in the brig and whine to everyone about "shitcurity". My only concern comes from when the command staff is woefully understaffed.

  14.

Can I still talk about things that piss me off even if people haven't posted here in awhile and I haven't played SS13 in forever? Because I'm going to talk about things that piss me off.

When I'm playing Doctor/Brig Physician and see non-medical/security staff wandering around the area because they saw the door open, and refuse to say anything to me when I go "Sir, you're not suppose to be in here!" Especially if they then complain when I find ways to get them out.

That's more of an OOC thing though, because they didn't even bother to communicate with me. It's possible they were new players, but if you're being asked to explain why you're in the area, I'd think even a new player would realize they can use the chat box or something, instead of just saying absolutely nothing. It's even worse when they start making threatening movements towards you. One, I'm staying a few spaces away from you for a reason. Two, you're not replying to anything I say at all. Three, now you're moving towards me actively trying to close the distance so you can do who knows what to me? Get flashed and removed from the area, peasant!

    Okay, I feel better now.

  15.

    Name: Arrietta Kale

    Age: 26

    Gender: Female

    Race: Human

    Blood Type: AB+

General Occupational Role(s): Medical, Maintenance and Supply, Security

Biography: From a young age Arrietta found the idea of being a doctor fascinating. Wanting to follow in her mother's footsteps, she began focusing almost single-minded on her studies. Internships and assistant roles were common activities in her life. Despite her occupational choice, Arrietta occasionally struggles with her phobias of blood and mutilation, which have been known to make her lose her nerve on occasion. She is quite aware of these weaknesses and they frequently push her to work extra hard. While she might know her way around medicine and a scalpel, she is loath to raise a hand against others, even finding it hard to do so in self defense.

Qualifications: Medical (Nurse), Supply, Security (minimal experience)

Employment Records: Nurse, Cargo Technician, Janitor, Brig Physician

Security Records: Recently took on the role of Brig Physician, received minor security training

Medical Records: Arrietta is a healthy 26 year old.

Personnel Photo (Appearance text): Standing at around 5'6", Arrietta is usually seen in one of two moods: Completely focused on her job, or more of a neutral/leaning towards slightly happy one. Her tone of voice as one would expect changes to reflect her current mood. While engrossed in her work she tends to take on a no-nonsense to borderline commanding tone. Outside of that her voice tends to be warm and welcoming.

  16.

Greetings! I'm Pinny, or PinnyFox in SS13, and I stumbled across this server while looking through the list, wanting something different than /tg/ or liberty station. My first round was interesting, to say the least, but it made me fall in love with you guys already :P

As far as SS13 goes, you'll typically see me as Arrietta Kale, although I might make up another character one of these days. I'm still trying to figure out just what kind of jobs I want Arrietta to focus on, but I'm thinking one of the medical/science jobs. I'm relatively new when it comes to SS13, as I just downloaded and started playing it a couple weeks ago. I'm not a stranger to RP, though. I started off in Neverwinter Nights by Bioware and eventually made my way to City of Heroes where I pretty much RP'd for five-six years before the game was shut down. Now I'm essentially a wandering vagrant.

Hope to see you all more in the future!
