draft of an improve lore page on humans

The Humans are a species of mammalian humanoids, distinctive for their soft skin, and dead hair follicles jutting from their scalp. They originate from the world of Earth. A planet with a decaying atmosphere, Earth once featured a wide array of wild life, fauna and human settlements. However a long history of conflict, and industrial pollution, has poisoned the planet. The polluted, barely habitable slums of old mega-cities are all that remain of this once lush planet. Everything outside these settlements is unable to sustain any form of life. The Humans are currently less technologically advanced than most, as they are a newer people.

Game Mechanics

  • Humans are a playable species with no karma price.
  • Humans speak primarily Galactic Common (GalCom). Most humans can also be expected to have a working knowledge of Sol Common (SolCom).
  • Humans can wear all standard NanoTrasen gear.
  • Humans possess no extra-normal abilities.

Physiology

Biology and Appearance

Standing at about 1.8 meters as the average with massive variation, Humans appear in a vast diversity of body morphologies. They have a thin to medium thickness membrane covering their flesh. This membrane is known in their native tongue as 'skin', and is pigmented to come in many different shades of brown and beige. Pale skin however seems to be most common outside of Earth. They possess small eyes, with varying shades of pigmentation, with thick movable skin flaps known as eyelids. Their noses are large dual tubes supported by cartilage, and just off their face. This nasal organ helps facilitate respiration. They have two long appendages known as arms they use to reach and grasp objects. They are also bipedal, with their legs similar to their arms, but with a much lesser degree of flexibility.

One of the primary physical aspects of a human is its hair, fibers that grow out of their scalp and hangs dead upon piercing the skin. These are long, tendrils that extend from their scalp and are of varying lengths, with female hair tending to be longer, though this is not always the case. The hair can be cut and styled at various lengths, and comes in many colors.

Humans have two sexes, male and female.

Growth

A skrell clutch usually contains about 50 eggs and when fertilized, hatches after a period of three months into larvae similar to a tadpole and are no more than a centimeter long upon hatching. These larvae inhabit a completely aquatic environment and feed on vegetation in the environment, their motor skills unable to function outside of water. Of the 50 larvae hatched, natural causes typically reduce the number to about 5. These causes typically consist in the form of genetic defects, immune deficiencies, and other factors. In the more rural parts of Jargon 4, natural predators are still a factor. While during this cycle, a larva is not officially considered to be a child due to the high mortality rate after hatching. Despite this, however they are specially protected by various legal bounds and the deliberate killing of them is considered a grave offense, being one of the highest crimes in skrell society with the punishment being exile. This larval period lasts eight months, in which the larvae will grow and develop legs as well as the cognitive functions equivalent to a human toddler. It is this point in which a skrell is considered to be a sentient being in the eyes of the law.

A skrell child stands at about 50 centimeters and will continue to grow until adulthood. Most children will retain the tail of their larval stage for several months after the development of legs until it will naturally fall off. Skrell children develop skills and basic cognition similarly to a human, though higher standards of education in skrell society typically has the equivalent of a fourth grader learning calculus as basic curriculum.

Lifespan

Normal life expectancy for most Human is 95 earth years.

Diet

Humans are omnivores, and as such their nutritional diet consists of vegetation and meats. Humans can eat almost any meal pleasing to their pallet, and that is not poisonous. Be it meat or fruit. Some humans however have vowed to never consume meat, and as such consume only vegetation. They are rare however. Humans also have an organ known as a 'liver' that filters toxins from their blood stream, allowing them to consume alcohol better than most species.

Society and Culture

Humans are a socially negligent people with a hateful and bland culture. Earth's landscape contained many diverse people, most of whom were met with scorn and hatred from whatever ruling class was in charge during the time. Gender equality is generally accepted however sexism is still seen on space stations. This is likely due to millennia of sexism and female subservience. Humans generally enter monogamous and long term relationships with one another in order to bear children.

Most cultures of Earth focus on self discovery, independence, and freedom. As a result most humans are selfish and ignorant people.

Humans have a long history of violence, greed, and hatred. An achievements made by the species were fueled by the those three. Wars over money, race, and pure anger were common in human history. Even now space is dominated by human corporations who stop at nothing to further profits.

Home Planet

Main: Earth

Humans originated from the world of Earth. A medium sized planet, oceans cover 71% of the planet's surface. Typical environments on the four continents consist of large plains, desserts, and many types of forest land. The Human will typically make their habitat in in a huge city, to live with the other humans. However due to unchecked pollution and nuclear conflict Earth can barely sustain life. Only the slums of once great cities hold humans. Everyone and everything outside those zones has died. Those in the slums live brutish and short lives. When Earth faced its fifth energy crisis plasma was discovered. Corporations of Earth rushed out to capture it and sell it back to the dying and powerless world. However they realized they could turn a greater profit by selling it to Mars and Luna, more wealthy human settlements. As a result much of Earth is still without power.

Military

Human military forces typically have multiple tiers with a caste system. Each group has their own specific function in relation to each other which makes for a swift and responsive military force. Their are a series of squads and groups that are commanded by a chain of officers giving orders and overseeing and operations. Humans fear death, and as a result avoid hand to hand combat, preferring ranged weaponry. With the advent of bluespace strikes, they can remotely kill their enemies from great distances. Even before this invention they would call in airstrikes of explosives to kill their enemy from afar without risking their own lives. This kind of mass ranged weaponry has created a problem for human military corporations. They cannot wage war openly on each other without risking massive casualties and damage, so instead they wage covert warfare. Hiring third party sabotage agents to attack each other in secret.

Relations with other Species

Historically, humans are not accepting of other species. In most cases, their prejudice causes violence. However as time has passed humans have become more accepting.
