Skrell and YOU

Greetings, esteemed crewmember!

In an effort to encourage inter-species cooperation and workplace efficiency, NanoTrasen has compiled a series of helpful guides on the various species that you may be working with!

(NOTE: If you are a member of the species this guide pertains to, please give it to the nearest crewmember of another species)

This particular guide refers to the species known as the Skrell

Skrell Naming Schemes

Traditionally, Skrell names were a single, long word, without any inherent meaning. Often an inventive combination of syllables rather than a preexisting word. Lately, however many Skrell families choose to follow the standard galactic naming scheme of using a First and Last name, with the latter indicating the family.

Skrell Physiology

The Skrell are a species of herbivorous, bipedal aquatic beings. They normally reach a height of around 175 cm, with males being very similar to females in appearance. Skrell are slightly translucent, allowing some light to pass through their skin, which can come in multiple different colors, although is usually green or blue. Skrell possess three long tendrils situated on their scalp and reaching their shoulders.

Skrell possess two large, black eyes, which although well-suited to working underwater, perform poorly when exposed to air. However, they are able to see well enough to work in an air-filled station environment

Skrell noses are a set of two slits located below their eyes. Similarly to other aquatic species, their respiratory system is capable of filtering oxygen out of inhaled water, allowing for breathing while submerged. Skrell walk on two plantigrade legs and, lacking any of the hardened structures that most species possess at the ends of their digits, , find most standard clothing comfortable.

The Skrellian Language

The Skrell language, Qixcuom, is a series of high pitched sounds, mostly inaudible to non-Skrell, which makes it impossible to learn for most other sentient species. For around 800 years, the Skrellian Language had been used by their entire planet. However, following the formation of the Skrell-Human Alliance in the year 2385, the newly created Galactic Common began to slowly replace it as their language of choice. Generally, most Skrell inhabitants of their homeworld can be expected to speak the new language fluently.

The Skrell Homeworld

The homeworld of the Skrell is called Jargon 4 in Galactic Common, a tropical planet covered mostly in water. With Skrell being able to survive both in water and on land, some of the planet’s settlements and industrial facilities are located underwater.

Following the first contact with the Human species, Jargon 4 and other Skrell colonies have experienced an economic boom, making the species’ holdings the second largest governmental economy in the galaxy.

The level of development on Jargon 4 is unparalleled among known civilizations. With a large amount of free social services available to all citizens and an incredibly peaceful society, Skrell living on the planet can enjoy very comfortable lives.

A Brief History File:Skrellflag.gif

The Skrell have a long history of internal conflict. Up until the year 500 BC their homeworld was divided into countries, often waging war over resources and territory. It was around that time, that several of the most powerful nations joined their forces to create the unified planetary government which came to rule Jargon 4. Eventually, all of the planet came under control of the body, either by peaceful integration or by force. The now-unified Skrell started quickly adapting the technologies used in warfare for more productive applications. The first spacecraft were quickly developed, and brief colonization of two other planets in their system took place - Jargon 3 and 6. Eventually, Skrell were able to produce very basic FTL crafts, which allowed them to explore nearby systems within a few hundred years, while their economy flourished.

The scientific and industrial revolution didn’t last for long, however. Many Skrell satisfied with their quality of life simply stopped working to focus on revelries and their personal lives, and slowly the Skrell society turned inwards and focused on development of their culture and arts.

The species remained mainly stagnant, up until the year 2296 where first contact was made by a Human exploration vessel, marking the beginning of a new age for both species.

The Skrell species, completely changed by the first contact with an alien civilization, changed their ways completely. Within a few years massive projects began with the aim of restoring the interstellar capabilities of the Skrell. A significant portion of the economy was committed to creating a navy for the planet.

Within fifty years the Skrell were on par with the Sol Federation’s forces. The two powers, both very eager to learn from and cooperate with the newly discovered neighbors, entered what would later be called the Human-Skrell Alliance. Dedicated to protecting both species’ colonies and interests in the galaxy. The body would later evolve to serve as the peacekeepers of the known space, acting to prevent conflict between all known civilizations.

Nowadays, the Skrell species has been massively overtaken in terms of development, both economically and militarily, but still remains a capable member of the long-term alliance with the Solar Federation.

Skrell Culture

Skrell live in fairly large families with one clutch of young usually numbering five to ten children. Education is free of charge on Skrell-controlled worlds and is generally considered to be of very high quality.

Skrell value foreign cultures and are very open to exchange. It is fairly easy to emigrate to a Skrell world, although foreigners can’t count on the same level of social security as indigenous citizens.

Centuries of focus on art and culture make it one of the most important aspects of a Skrell’s life. Spiritual pursuits are held highly in the Skrell society. While no specific religion per se is practiced on Jargon 4, the belief in individual souls is common, with many believing in reincarnation in some form. Generally, all living beings are considered important in the Skrellian culture.

Skrell value self-improvement and ambition above all else, but consider material enrichment as important as spiritual life.

Present Day

One of the oldest species on the galactic arena, the Skrell have secured a very comfortable position both in terms of their economic output, as well as quality of life. Currently their government focuses on bringing enlightenment to less developed species, as well as enforcing peace in the galaxy, in cooperation with the Trans-Solar Federation.

Technologically ahead of even the Humans, the Skrell homeworld proves to be one of the best places to live in the known galaxy. Despite this, some Skrell find life there boring and uneventful and choose to leave the planet in search of adventure.

Remember, crewmember, mutual respect and cooperation are the cornerstones of success and productivity!
