The gas turbine is an alternative way to produce power on the station, exclusive to an Atmospheric Technician. Although it will probably be the last power source to be set up on the station, it is still capable of producing upwards of 100 kW. You can accomplish this with a method of pumping in compressed gas mixtures to pressurize the chamber, then ignite the mixture to pressurize it further. When turned on, the turbine utilizes this reaction to produce power relative to the pressure building in the chamber.

You need to set up a burn mix. The idea is to produce the maximum amount of pressure in a confined room in order the turbine blades to spin faster. In order to do that, you need a lot of heat.

Atmospheric Technician

We're going to activate the gas turbine with a basic set-up, there are more efficient ways to do this, so feel free to experiment with new ideas (Just don't fill the station with plasma). First of all, you're going to want to know how the pipes work, check out the Guide to Atmospherics. Now that you know the basics, you'll need to replace the pump leading from the plasma tank to the mix chamber with a volume pump, this will increase the amount of gas transferred, as it deals with the total volume of the gas and not the pressure. You then do the same for the pure O2 chamber, replace the pumps leading from it to the mix chamber with a volume pump. After all that, we have to start mixing the gases before they go into the mix chamber, so replace the junction leading from the plasma tank, to the mix chamber with a gas mixer and set it to mix at 67% to 33%, this is the ideal mixture for the gas turbine (If you find something better, let us know!). That's almost it for the Atmospherics lab, last thing that we need to do is remove the pressure valve going from our mix chamber to space, with a regular pipe. Doing this will not limit the amount being sent to the turbine room.
Guide To Atmospherics

Now we can move on to the final part, the turbine room. In here, most of what you've got to do is piping, so make sure to bring the dispenser with you. First of all, replace all the necessary pumps with volume pumps, this means any bringing gas in, and any pumping it into the chamber. After that, there's not much more to do, go around and check all of the pipes are in order, double check that you are happy with the layout, then turn it all on. You should be seeing your mixture churning out upwards of 50kW, if not, something must have gone wrong and you're leaking plasma all over the station, you better fix that.

The turbine is a tertiary power source accessed through maintenance tunnels adjacent to Atmospherics.

Summary

The gas turbine is an alternative way to produce power on the station, and is typically exclusive to Atmospheric Technician. It is capable of producing upwards of 100 kW if set up correctly and may even produce more power with further upgrades and tinkering. Gas turbines require a lot of pressure to in order to run effectively. This can be accomplished by setting up a burn mix which will create a large amount of pressure when ignited.

How To Set Up the Turbine

 • Atmospheric Access
 • Basic Atmospheric Knowledge

Initial Setup

Burn Mix

In Atmospherics, the mix loop connects to all the different types of gases in the Large Gas Containers outside Atmospherics. Re-pipe the mix loop and place a gas mixer in which node 1 and node 2 outlets are connected to the Oxygen and Plasma. Set the gas mixer so that it outputs 87% Oxygen and 13% Plasma. Then, set the output pressure to max (4500 kPa) and turn it on.

This is how the nodes work.

This is what it should look like once you pipe everything accordingly.

Gas Mixing Tank Control

Once the gas mixer is properly set, turn on all the pressure pumps (including any valves), leading to the gas mixing container, on and set to them to max. The gas mixing container is normally found inside the distribution loop area/room. Make sure you turn off any pumps or valves that may lead to an unwanted location within the pipeline.

If everything is done correctly, you should see Oxygen and Plasma inside the gas mixing container and on the computer that controls the sensors inside it. Finally, turn on the pressure pump That leads to the turbine room/area.

Turbine Setup

Inside the turbine room/area, you should see a few pressure pumps leading to the turbine airlock. Turn on all the pressure pumps, leading to the compressor chamber, on and set them to max. Make sure you set the pressure pump to max inside the turbine internal airlock as well. Next you want to open the blast doors the are found at the output of the turbine. Normally there should be a button to open it. At this point you should see Plasma inside the compressor chamber. Turn on the igniter and you should see the burn mix in flames.

This is what a turbine looks like

Turbine Controls

To start up the turbine, find the gas turbine control computer and set the turbine status to the 'on' position. You can see information about the turbine including the turbine speed in rpm and the power being generated, etc.

SMES

The final step is to harness and output power to the station. Go to the SMES and under 'Input Management', set the 'Charge Mode' to Auto and 'Input Level' to Max. Under 'Output Management', set the 'Output Status' to Online and 'Output Level' to 100,000.

Conclusion

Now that everything is set up, you should now have a working turbine running at high capacity. You can leave it alone or upgrade it later. The turbine doesn't require much attention as needed, and with a bit of practice, you can set it up within 5 minutes or fewer. You can also keep the output status offline and only set it online for emergency power only.

Tips

 • A fully upgraded Turbine can output around 1,000,000 watts of power before overheating. You'll need to upgrade the SMES as well to be able to take advantage of it.
 • The Gas Mixing Chamber can be bypassed to have a direct link to the turbine pipe
 • Replacing the Pressure Pumps with Volumes will not affect the amount of power it will output. It would only create a huge bottleneck that you may likely have to deal with later if things do fail.
